... was mildly shocked to learn about pre-paid funerals. Probably bought to least burden your survivors ... but what if the funeral home goes bankrupt in the mean time ... other thoughts?

At best, it's a gamble.

I know the context of the phrase, but now it makes me think that you can pay for multiple funerals while dying only once.

Yes, I was offered one of these 20 years ago (by an insurance agent). I didn't take it up. A far better solution (in my opinion) is to open a regular savings account, and pay into it the amount of the subscription. The only way that the pre-payment plan wins, is if you die soon after taking it out. I prefer to gamble that I will live a bit longer. :-)

My sister's mother-in-law had a pre-paid funeral. I think it was handled by an insurance company but sold by the funeral parlor. When she died the funeral cost more then the pre-paid funeral plan paid so they had to pay the difference. I agree with @Senecio, Start a savings account. Another option is to make sure you have enough life insurance.
