I dont know what to answer. They could have allowed a seamless Win10 to Win11 upgrade on most of the existing Win10 base of systems.
But IMHO Microsoft got greedy and likely worked behind the scenes with the system hardware vendors to push the new hardware 'required' for Win11.
But lots of customers balked, and thus the ESU path to keep running Win10.
Then system AI developers came in and with their massive demands for hardware that blew up the Win10 to Win11 hardware upgrade path,
making it impossible or prohibitively expensive to replace existing Win10 system with a new Win11 system.
Next year Microsoft is going to want you to ditch your Win11 system anyway and go out and replace it with a brand new AI enabled system.
MS has the power of changing the minimum requirements... Continue to push ESU until Ram crises is over.. or lose people to Linux as Linux becomes more user-friendlier for every year
I would never mess with Home/Pro as its a rolling release that changes with every H release.Hehe... don't tempt me.
I was reading somewhere (and I think someone also mentioned on these forums) that somebody may have found a way to get around the SSE4.2 and PopCnt requirements for Windows 11 24H2 and above. I'll keep an eye on that but apparently it is only 'experimental' at this stage. Seems that only about 1% of Windows 11 files require SSE4.2 and PopCnt at the moment. Funny about that, must be the 1% that prevents Windows from booting if your CPU doesn't have the new requirements.
I ran that old pc for a few more hours today with no problems whatsoever (bit slowish though as you'd expect). W11 23H2 fully updated to Nov '25 which is as far as it will go. The BIOS for it is the latest one (from 2009) but I re-flashed it anyway in case there was any corruption after all the years this PC was running, especially after the button battery finally died, whenever that was.
I should have snapped a few pictures of the old PC case it was all in before I threw it out. I might have been able to clean it but it would have taken ages, there was so much dust and dirt in it and the air intakes and fans were totally clogged up. I would have been surprised if any air had been getting into the case at all.
I didn't investigate it fully but someone had done a splice job or something on the front panel wires for the old case, there was black electrical tape wrapped around parts of it. That was when I finally decided it wasn't worth all the trouble and just put everything into a new case.
I even put in a USB3 PCI card that I found in my collection because that old motherboard from 2007 only has USB2. It gives me 3 USB3 ports on the back and I can also connect the cable for the front panel USB3 port to the card which I would have had to leave disconnected if I didn't have that card. I haven't checked yet to see if the ports actually run at USB3 speeds but at least they're working according to Device Manager.
Win 1 to 8.1 was LTSC releases, so once it was installed it never changed..
When doing deep system mods you will get into trouble in some way or another when it updating/up-rolling to a new version.
Then you have to tweak it all again.
When using win10/11 LTSC you dont get that problem. Once it is installed it stays as is.
Messing(deep tweaking) with Home/Pro is good for learning. But if you dont do it for learning its just a waste of time messing with Home/pro to redo things every six month or what it is when they release a new major H-release.
If it takes 1-2 hour to "fix" the uproll two times a year.. i rather spend time with friends or do other things on those hours.... and that is why i went for the win10 LTSC IoT version..
Install once, Tweak once, then have updates until the hardware dies or the OS goes EOL.
