WATCH OUT FOR RAM PRICES!

So Micron doesn't pay taxes anymore? Odd, I wonder how they manage that?
Oh, I'm quite sure welfare recipients pay taxes. Some more than others, in fact. Nothing flies like Corporate Welfare when record profits are at an all time high. Let the chips fall where they may. Or, as George Carlan declared, "It's a great big club and you ain't innit".

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

it would look like the home build market is going to fade out of existence
and be the preserve of the very well off who will be the only ones who can afford it.

the average user is going to have to put up with
LGA1150, Intel series 4 CPU's, DDR3 1600 Ram and whatever GPU they can get a mortgage for
but take heart the A.I data centres are going to be well stacked with the latest and greatest
the question is ..will anybody be able to afford too use them ..

not so happy days for anybody wanting to build their own system
best of luck Steve ..

Given the situation as it is, I think Microsoft is going to have to reevaluate when turning Windows 10 off again since most people aren't going to be able to afford a new machine at this time, and I have yet seen any discounts for people who they (MS) want to upgrade to Windows 11 yet can't because of the cost increases for hardware.

This might explain why Microsoft hasn't turned off the ability to use programs like Rufus to install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware. They could quite easily stop that practice if they wanted to.

And they can either:

- Do away with the hardware requirement Windows 11 now requires

or

- Extend Windows 10 for the next few years

Neither of which Microsoft wants to do, but something's gonna have to give way...

or Windows 10 will just continue to work like it always has. All Microsoft is doing is not updating it anymore. They aren't stopping Windows 10 from working. Heck there are still many folks that still use Windows 7 for Pete's sake.

Neither of which Microsoft wants to do, but something's gonna have to give way...
MS didn't want to give W10 consumers more that the 1st year of ESU, but they changed their minds and gave them the 2nd year.
Didn't cost MS anything, they were already committed to a three year program of paid for ESU for organizations and businesses on Windows 10, they just had to flick a switch on the update servers to let consumers get the 2nd year's updates. They could do the same again for the 3rd and final year of ESU.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

This might explain why Microsoft hasn't turned off the ability to use programs like Rufus to install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware. They could quite easily stop that practice if they wanted to.

i cant burn the new Windows 11 26H2 using Rufus on two systems running Windows 11 26H2
it keeps coming up with USB busy and then Rufus shuts down with a failure
but nothing in any of the logs, reliability monitor or problem devices and no error codes.

but the Media Creation Tool is burning the same 26H2 ISO on the same USB port to the same USB stick drive.

i will dig out my test rig which is running Windows 10 and try burning 26H2 with Rufus on that
but it is looking like MS is putting blocks on Rufus burning the new 26H2 ISO

more testing is needed
best of luck Steve ..

or Windows 10 will just continue to work like it always has. All Microsoft is doing is not updating it anymore. They aren't stopping Windows 10 from working. Heck there are still many folks that still use Windows 7 for Pete's sake.

I wouldn't use it without security updates. I don't think you're gonna find too many people around here who advise doing that.

And I've been one to hold on to old OSes for as long as I could get away with it, and then only upgraded to the next only at the last moment.

They could extend Windows 10 even longer than that, if they wanted to. And if the right circumstances present itself, they may even have to.

As I said before, something's got to give...

I agree, I too am always using up to date hardware and software. However, there are some with very limited incomes that have no choice. They either use what they have, or they are no longer online.

Oh, I've been there, done that. ;-)

A lot of people out there don't even have a computer at home anymore. Most will prolly use their smartphones for what they want to do, anyway.

Really, if some are only using their PC to browse the web, there are other OS's they can use. Personally, I could probably get away with another OS, but I do use Word every now and again, but no other apps. I'm used to the Windows platform, since Windows 3.0, so at my age, changing would probably be real confusing. :-)

If microsoft really want people to stop using win10 when Ram/disk prices is like they are, so people cant afford upgrade to required hardware... Microsoft has the power to just change the installer so win11 can be installed on older hardware.
As long bypassing works, then its no real minimum requirements.. just preferred requirements.
