Watch what is next for Windows event on June 24, 2021

Read more:
PCs with Windows 11 pre-installed will be available later this year.

The Windows 11 upgrade rollout plan is still being finalized but is scheduled to begin late in 2021 and continue into 2022. Specific timing will vary by device.

If you’d like to see if your current PC meets the minimum requirements, download and run the PC Health Check app.

It’s free to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. But only Windows 10 PCs that are running the most current version of Windows 10 and meet the minimum hardware specifications will be able to upgrade. You can check to see if you have the latest updates for Windows 10 in Settings/Windows Update. The free upgrade offer does not have a specific end date for eligible systems. However, Microsoft reserves the right to eventually end support for the free offer. This end date will be no sooner than one year from general availability.

Windows 11 minimum specs:
  • 1Ghz 64-bit dual-core processor
  • 4GB RAM
  • 64GB storage
  • 9-inch display (1366x768 resolution)
  • UEFI, Secure Boot & TPM 2.0 compatible
  • DirectX 12 compatible graphics / WWDM 2.x

I imagine the middle box means if no TPM or the Bios version called Intel Platform Trust Technology aka Intel PTT and AMD fTPM and it will work fine but you have less beefier hardware (CPU/Ram etc) then not so much.

How many Insiders actually have TPM tho'? I don't understand why that requirement - Win 10X (which Win 11 now is) works in containers (for Win 32 apps) which like UWP is secure enough - I need to do a lot more research on why TPM has been made a proviso...unless as Win 10X was a mobile OS it's irrevocably built-in.

TPM has been around since at least 2013 on PRO/WIFI type Mobos not so much higher end Gaming models till more recently but it is now kind of defunct and the above Intel/AMD Bios versions will replace it.

I checked my machine and it has TPM 2.0 native. I definitely would have had issues trying the Win11 on bare metal on my old machine, though.

Yeah, my HP Z230 Tower Workstation was made in 2014 but I had to go into BIOS to start TPM. I was running it on hardware, not Virtual Machine software.

The only OEM things on my computer is the case and the mother board. I upgraded everything else including the CPU to i7, Two SSDs, a Terabyte HD, Added the Nvidia Graphics board, new BluRay player, and went from Windows 7 to Win 10 and tried Win 11. Also added more RAM, a blue tooth amplifier for my hearing aides to extend the range and an antenna for WIFI. Practically a new machine.

The motherboard is the key part of the "non-OEM" that he was referring to.

It's where both TPM and UEFI w/ Secure boot are found.

It's where both TPM and UEFI w/ Secure boot are found.
TPM and UEFI are part of the BIOS, one small chip on the motherboard.

The only device I have which will run W11 is my Surface Laptop. All my desktops were built before 2015 and do not have TPM 2.0. I can see I may have to buy some new motherboards which in turn will require new CPUs and memory. My current desktops are perfectly adequate for what I do so I am reluctant to spend the money but I don't see I have any option.

IMHO Suggest you save your money to buy a new computer with Windows 11 already on it.

Well - there is also the option to not upgrade them any time soon. As @jimbo45 said he was able to spoof the requirements in the leak in a VM, so unless you require a bare metal install, you'll be able to use Win 10 for over 4 more years....free and clear.

Plenty of time to upgrade. I upgraded my previous rig at 9 years lol.

I agree there is no need for me to rush into upgrading my desktops and within the next 4 years I am more than likely going to upgrade one of them anyway. My Surface Laptop will give me all the experience I need on Windows 11 and in any case I am using it more and more - it is such a lovely device.

I'm starting to get bad vides, kind of like some of this is half-baked, at least as far as the health check utility goes. You notice that when it says that your computer cannot run Win 11, it gives no reason whatsover as to why.

My laptop failed the test and it has TPM 2.0, WDDM 2.7 graphics drivers (requires 2.x), 32 GB RAM, WiFi 6E, and a 1TB NVMe SSD.

Very annoying.

Before anyone runs out and gets a new PC or motherboard, give it a month or three. The headwinds on this artificial "requirement" are already so gusty that surely the odds are in our favor that it will be rescinded before RTM, at least for Insiders. The Feedback Hub is already overflowing, like the Answers forum, like Reddit, like....

Update: It seems that TPM 1.2 (and Secure Boot) are enough:

Now you're catching on.

Officially, those are going to be systems that it is not recommended to install Win11 on, but won't actually be blocked. See the twitter image above.

But will still be without 1.2, and even that is a problem for some, like any system not in UEFI mode, for instance. Or, say, the Core i5 (2nd -gen) system I'm on at the moment with no Intel TXT.
