You (and potentially anyone who has an older machine now) still have over 4 years to use Windows 10. So I can see them sticking to their guns on this.

User outcry probably won't mean much, but if businesses jump on board and also start crying foul, then there may be a real chance of them backtracking from the requirements.

I'd be interested in them making the case of how TPM is relevant to 11 specifically as opposed to 10. I have a feeling that they won't do that because there may not be a case.

I disagree. And I'm betting it is going to have to do with changes to the kernel, or some other backend component.

While I do see this as a possibility that Microsoft is simply trying to strong-arm users into upgrading to newer devices, I also see this as a possible back-end issue with something they are developing - kernel related, security related, etc. - that engenders the need for TPM.

Remember, newer variants of Spectre-like and Meltdown-like vulnerabilities are still being found for even the most modern CPUs, so they may have a sneaky trick up their sleeves to help with that. Or it could be related to personal security - such as a means they're developing to combat the rampant spread of ransomware.....

Also, remember, that at one time, rumors were going around that Windows 10 would be 64bit only, but they backtracked on that. Now, they've got more clout and it's been ... 6+ years since those rumors were around. And this time they might make it stick.

Exactly. The swap of Win 11's install.wim/esd to Win 10 ISO works perfectly. MS can keep their TPM.

PS: Does Win 11 Home even have bitlocker? If not, what's the sense of TPM on those PC's?

TPM is required for the Windows Hello thing that some users will not use.

Found the TPM on my motherboard. Asus Rog Strix Z490-A Gaming. Hidden in BIOS (UEFI) under Advanced -> PCH-FW -> PTT.

I disabled the physical TPM and was still able to install W11 on VMWare wks rel 16 (I've only got the "Semi official leaked" one) with "Virtual TPM" and messing around with encryption - although this version of W11 installed OK in any case without all that stuff.

W11 installed also OK on the VM I created with the "Virtual TPM encryption" stuff.

Of course this version of W11 might be a lot more "Tolerant" of hardware than the official versions due to appear shortly. Don't rush out immediately to get new hardware - just simply wait a while until things settle down if you really have problems installing W11.

Right now it is. We do not know if this will continue to hold true for the future or not.

That is what is most worrisome to me - that established workaround methods will be rendered obsolete by Microsoft before this thing reaches general release status.

Just one of my ponderings:
Hopefully Win11 doesn't come with some B:S that no one, but a few, really uses, like that 3D crap, (group folder included)

Oh, it will, because the more niche features they include the more users they garner.

But at least they are moving things out of the initial install like Features on Demand and taking Cortana completely out of the installation process....

I mean, $%^& having to wait for the OS to pick a generic sound card driver so it could speak to me and ask if I wanted to continue talking to the machine or continue manually via a KB - I should NOT have to wait on that. EVER.

That was very disappointing, expecting something on a CAD level and got a maker for baby books.

They can kill Cortana of in my opinion, after they castrated her, and got rid of useful stuff like her finding the song in your music folder and playing it on Groove, or being able to shutdown/sleep your pc by telling her, I have uninstalled her:
I even have the uninstall command on one of my sticky notes

Uninstall Cortana for All Users in PowerShell:
Get-appxpackage -allusers *Microsoft.549981C3F5F10* | Remove-AppxPackage

There are new minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11. In order to run Windows 11, devices must meet the following specifications. Devices that do not meet the hard floor cannot be upgraded to Windows 11, and devices that meet the soft floor will receive a notification that upgrade is not advised.

Hard Floor:

CPU: Core >= 2 and Speed >= 1 GHz

System Memory: TotalPhysicalRam >= 4 GB

Storage: 64 GB

[Security: TPM Version >= 1.2 and SecureBootCapable = True

Smode: Smode is false, or Smode is true and C_ossku in (0x65, 0x64, 0x63, 0x6D, 0x6F, 0x73, 0x74, 0x71)
