I'm considering swapping my very low time Samsung 990 Pro 1TB for this Wester Digital. I am running an HP All In One i7 with an Intel RST VMD Controller 467F. The bios does not allow me to revert to AHCI to allow me to use a cobbled Rufus . Samsung ISO to update the firmware and Samsung tells me they have no plans to fix the issue. I have to send the drive back to them under warranty for them to flash it every time a new firmware gets released.

By contrast, Western Digital software allows users to do it from withitn their web software and they do not provide ISO files externally.

I'd appreciate everyones thoughts on the WD drive. Thanks.

That's right, I installed Samsung Magician, which updated my device to the latest firmware without any issues. The next day, I uninstalled SM, and that was it. :-)

Magician is reporting the current firmware for my drive begins with 5XXXXXX. There are 3 subsequent updates I cannot install unless I remove the drie and instll it into a portable and make a Rufus USB with the ISO and go to another PC, flash, then reinstall. A whole lotta bother when I can do the same with a WD and no uninstalls etc.

Yes, the Samsung has fast R/W's. The WD is about 2.5% slower. Has anyone had any experience with the WD ?

Install Samsung Magician:

It has options to update the firmware.
I would never replace the Samsung with a WD that has nowhere near the the read/Write speed.
???

I own neither, but their specs are very similar.

Personally, I wouldn't swap drives just to keep the firmware up-to-date. But then again, I've never owned an AIO with badly locked down BIOS settings.

How do you not get AHCI? I have all Samsung drives and they work on AHCI just perfectl;y, and I can update no problem with Magician.

I don't understand the problem, other than Rufus is maybe messing you up, though I don't know how it could be. That seems to be a whole lot of grief for what should be a simple update. I just updated with Magician and I never had to take out any drives.

my storage is WDC SN770 1TB NVMe SSD. a similar but slower one.

the computer runs out of SSD slot. hence my solution was using NVMe adapter card on PCIe slot. it run fine. even on a 15-yrs old computer, it had no problem. in reality, I often move it from one PCIe slot to another computer's PCIe slot as its function is Storage.

I have had a number of Samsung nvme and now replaced them with two Western Digital blacks. They perform as well as any Samsung from my experience. Samsung was on top for a while but many manufacturers have caught up.

You are however comparing a drive with DRAM cache to one without.

BTW, there has never been a firmware update for either one of my WDC nvme drives. So I wouldn't choose based on that.

If my memory serves me correctly a few years agoSamsung released a firmware update through Magician that tanked more than a few drives. In roughly three years they've released 7 firmware uppdates for the 990 pro which is odd somehow. The Intel RST VMD controller is an extremely common component so it surprised me how deficient they are in servicing it.

Its good to hear you havent had to do a firmware update om your WD's.

I had that drive, I wa lucky though. Also, they had a firmware issue that would brick one of their SSD after a specific time period. They fixed that after some time. I had that too. My opinion is they are the same as most high end makers, they just got the jump on speed and controller, and everyone else had to catch up.

Sometimes cloning can help you get around issues like this. I don't know all the particular reasons why and I realize it is a bit of a cheat but it has worked for me in the past with newer silicon. Just a suggestion.

Same problems with updating firmware on WD drives with Intel RST in raid mode. It's not a Samsung problem!
This material is dated 2016 prior to NVME drives and refers to drivers beginning with 14.x.x.x Mine is 19.x.x.x. My bios reports not running raid mode. I specifically called WD/Sandisk and discussed this with them and after they checked they advise my PC would update the firmware through their software. They were aware of the Samsung issues and they advised they did not have those issues. I only have one PCiE slot if this makes sense.

FWIW this PC Originally shipped with a WD NVME and the HP web site has firmware update files for all drives EXCEPT Samsung.

Thanks.
I have the older WD BLACK SN770 gen4 NVMe and it's never given me a problem. If you're really keen on returning the drive to Samsung I don't see why that should be an issue. I also have a Samsung 980 Pro 2TB that works equally well. I have had to return NVMe in the past to Samsung simply because it wasn't compliant with my brand new build. Ironically, I'm not a big fan of WD mechanical drives but I have to say that I'm impressed with their silicon. I have some WD silicon pushing around a decade now in RAID 10 and I've never had to return a WD SSD of any kind so far. If you are trying to run NVMe in a RAID array that can be a tricky procedure and not all hardware is cut out for it; but even in RAID mode you should be able to run a single stick of NVMe. I also wonder if your main board can accommodate gen 4 SSDs as not all can.
