OS
Win10 Pro
Really not sure where to post this.

Home/Office PC, Win 10, will be Win 11 OS, Asus B550 plus with wifi MB, AMD,Rysen 4600g CPU.

GKs want to pool and buy me a Web Cam this Christmas so asked me to choose, obviously l want to keep their spend down.

But choosing is a nightmare.

What I thought was going to be easy, isn't, it's a minefield.

With poor brand reviews , WCs not working with/or their Apps, a number if reviews are to be trusted not working with the OS, some not compatible with AMD or Intel CPUs and so on.

I live in the UK, I want a web cam so the kids can talk to me using Zoom, something like that, room where PC is quite dark, a swivel Webcam would be prefered but not a necessity.

Any user experience, recommendations, advise, links would be appreciated.

If all you want is one that you can talk to and see your kids, you should be able to get one for less than $50 USD that will work fine. You will have to have a Microphone too. Some web cams are equipped with microphones, some aren't. All I've ever used is an external microphone so can't attest to their quality.

I have a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 that's some years old. I don't use it a great deal, but it seems solid. I've used it for a couple of Zoom meetings during the pandemic. It sits on top of the monitor. It tilts (vertically) but does not swivel (side to side). It works fine with the Windows 11 24H2 Camera app.

I think something from the Logitech 920 family camera could be a safe choice, if your GKs can afford one. And if you can live without the swivel.

Thanks for the links. :-)

That's weird. I was looking at the same Logitech series, when I saw this topic...

Yes I've been looking at the Logitech 920 series but a lot of the reviews have not been great.

If swivel isn't available in final choice, ath ability to mount via a tri-pod or stand would be useful

The Widows 11 24H2 camera app, is that a seperate app to be downloaded?

Also, If I wanted to, is it possible to record, file and store webcam footage, can all web cams do this or only some can?

Over the years, I've had at least a half dozen webcams, starting at $50, now a $200 Brio..., a quality experience is when your viewers aren't disappointed with your picture quality.

You get what you pay for..., however, seeing as it's being gifted, you can look a gift horse in the mouth! ;-)

The C920s is solid!
And I myself have the 4K Brio but that's a more expensive webcam. It too is solid.

I don't know what reviews you're looking at, but do not put too much stock in Amazon's reviews. Lots of users will ding a product for stuff having zero to do with the item itself. Stuff like a 1-star rating because the delivery person didn't knock on their door.

READ the reviews before deciding if they have merit, don't just look at the stars.

What is the difference between the E and the S models?
The main difference between Logitech E-Series and S-Series webcams is that E-Series webcams support H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC), which is better for live streaming:
E-Series: Some E-Series webcams, like the C930E and C925E, support H.264 SVC encoding, which is better for live streaming if the end point also supports it.
S-Series: S-Series webcams may not support H.264 SVC encoding.

Ok, thanks, how would I know if the end point supports it, do I need to know this and if it doesn't, ( end point ) does it matter my end?

If swivel isn't available in final choice, ath ability to mount via a tri-pod or stand would be useful

The Widows 11 24H2 camera app, is that a seperate app to be downloaded?
Yes.
Also, If I wanted to, is it possible to record, file and store webcam footage, can all web cams do this or only some can?
You would need camera software for that.
Logitech Capture is feature rich and works excellent and it's absolutely free.

Thank you, do all web cams have this mount feature?

I'm asking because my monitor is a thin bevel 1080p TV so mounting options will be important instead of clamping to the screen.
