It is hard to explain so a picture is worth a thousand words. Here is this grey box with a bar in all my photo thumbnail icons, so what is it and how to I get rid of them?

That did not work. I have never seen that symbol before either. Always someth8ng new to irritate us. I suspect something in an update or some hacker lurking about.

You may have a corrupted Icon cache, first thing to try is a reboot.

I do not believe that to be a windows overlay. Look in registry location HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers to see what 3rd party apps on your computer have access to manage overlays Once we know which apps can, maybe we can narrow it down to to what the overlay indicates

My photo icons don't show a date. At least, I assume that 20240916 means 09/16/2024 (US date format).

After deleting the two images with the gray bars the problem went away. I now think it was a MS sneaky and will not worry about it again.

The problem with these problems is that people offer fixes that are behind time and convoluted with too much info. Thye try to help but by the time one investigates the system is not the same. Internet keeps everything and out of date info stay around forever, so when I read the fix the menus are different and confusion ensues.

Anyway, occasionally I pick up double blue arrows in images and I resort to fixing corrupted files. How they get corrupt is a mystery.
