I'm a mid-aged man from France, and I'm very passionate about computer stuff. Which doesn't necessarily make me an expert.
I'm currently in the process of building a new rig, to replace my old (but still working against all odds
) Core i3 530 & Windows 7 rig.
Yes, I'm still a Win 7 user... for the moment. I've been delaying this, but in a few weeks I'll be making the big jump to Win 11.
I'm currently getting used to Win 11 on my GF's laptop (a nice Asus Zenbook 14 Flip OLED with a 5900HX).
Honestly I'm a Win 7 fan. I run a heavily customized Win 7 that suits my needs just about perfectly.
Among other things, I'm using a particular dark theme (SkullTrail by X3remes) that is possibly the best dark theme I've ever experienced. Visually it's just perfect for everyday use. Here's how it looks (don't mind the start menu, I've changed it anyway):
Honestly I don't need anything more. But sadly my rig is getting seriously old, and I can't stay on Win 7 forever, because of lack of support (OS and apps). So I'll soon be installing a fresh Win 11 from scratch...
... but right after that (and after a full OS image backup just in case), there will be some heavy customization again: one of my goals with Win 11 is to make it look and behave close enough to my current Win 7 (start menu, dark theme for native AND non-native apps, icons, shortcuts, context menus...) while retaining all the nice Win 11 assets.
Of course SkullTrail just doesn't exist for Win 11 (its dev stopped working on it about 12 years ago ). And unfortunately Win 11's default dark theme doesn't feel just as good. So I guess I'll have to find another dark theme (unless a Win 7 theme can be magically adapted to Win 11 somehow?). As for the rest of the system, I've already found some tools and hacks that go in the right direction.
I'll probably have a couple questions on that customization side. Well, maybe a bit more than a couple.

Yes, I'm still a Win 7 user... for the moment. I've been delaying this, but in a few weeks I'll be making the big jump to Win 11.
I'm currently getting used to Win 11 on my GF's laptop (a nice Asus Zenbook 14 Flip OLED with a 5900HX).
Honestly I'm a Win 7 fan. I run a heavily customized Win 7 that suits my needs just about perfectly.

- fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.
UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.
I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

There's a lot to customize in W11 and a lot utilities for it. Don't know about that particular one but even MS is into it. For instance they just released Bliss theme from Windows XP. It's also easier to maintain dark mode and judging by insider versions there will be even more of it. Also there's still good stuff same as in W7, Control panel, Device and disk management etc. Although there's tendency to redo them to new style a lot of those are just duplicated.
PS. You might have just missed the boat for free upgrade to W11 from W7, MS just curtailed it a few weeks ago.
