Install date/time shows as 10th Feb at 18:16, which is when the Patch Tuesday update was installed.

This is quite an important update to MIDI. MIDI 1.0 in Windows was seriously outdated, and MS have been working for quite a while on modernising it.

Fair enough. I've never had any use for MIDI but I guess it's needed

Therefore it should be installed/updated even if you do not happen to use the facility.

These devices appeared over the last weeks after some update.

The most annoying change is a device that now appears in Settings->Devices
"Service Test Loopback A"

With HDMI audio this seems unnecessary, even the onboard Realtek audio has no MIDI interface - as likely for none of the other users recently finding and mentioning this issue - so hopefully will be hidden in some future update.

I'm puzzled by how anyone is annoyed or concerned by any working device listed in the sub-menu of device manager. The only annoyance for me is if I have a device that is not working or has an exclamation mark. Otherwise, I never see device manager. But that's just me as I don't fret over such stuff and just let Windows updates and my OEM driver updates do their thing.

Yeah, I'd like to know that as well. The less unused junk, the better.

If by chance I ever have a need for it, I can download it in the future. Or if need be, I can do without.

No. They're virtual devices created by Windows to implement the new MIDI 2.0 features, regardless of your specific audio device. It's now part of the core Windows HW stack.

It's like when you have a network interface or Bluetooth controller, and Windows creates a long list of virtual network devices whether you wanted them or not. Learn to live with it, or don't allow Windows to update itself.

Although users don't have to justify being annoyed or concerned with unexpected changes appearing on their PC, the issue isn't extra devices being added to the sub-menus of Device Manager - it's the meaningless unwanted device being added to Settings->Devices (and the older Control Panel -> Devices and Printers)
