What can be wrong with WiFi?

I have a Technicolor router connected to a fiber modem. It serves as an access point for 5 GHz Wi-Fi. A TRENDnet router is connected in series and delivers 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Two PCs are connected to the Technicolor through Ethernet.

I observe disturbances on the 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. Sometimes the internet access seems to be lost for several seconds, but it comes back.

Due to the home network architecture, all my devices access the internet through the Technicolor, but only 5 GHz Wi-Fi shows this misbehavior. I observe these breaks on a PC and on a Chromecast. Most of my devices are set up to switch the Wi-Fi network in case of outage, so I suspect that the problem affects more devices, but they switch to 2.4 GHz and the problem is never conspicuous.

Since two devices show the problem, I suspect that the problem is with the Technicolor. However, all my traffic passes it, and most devices work fine. A Wi-Fi Analyzer shows a strong and undisturbed 5 GHz Wi-Fi signal.

What can be wrong? The problem is intermittent but irritating. What can I do?

Can you swap the Technicolor and the TRENDnet?

Does it still happen with the TRENDnet disconnected? Are you pretty sure there is nothing in your vicinity that could be creating 5GHz interference?

@kelper: No, I cannot swap the Technicolor and the TRENDnet. The Technicolor must terminate the fiber transmission. It is required by my internet provider. Moreover, it also implements IP telephony, so it must be first after the fiber modem.

Everyone does realize that we have just gone through a severe solar storm recently and that communications like cell phone , internet / wifi are going to have disruptions intermittently .... right?

Unless your issue has been happening before the last week or so , I would wait a while before tearing your hair out. I am on fiber wifi and my access and connection over the last week or so has been less than optimal.

@steveg: At the beginning, I used only Technicolor, and I don't remember disturbances at that time. I added the TRENDnet because it has a much stronger 2.4 GHz signal. I couldn't say for how long I've had this problem. I added Chromecast quite recently, and then the problem becomes extremely distinct when a movie stops in the middle. Some of my devices have only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so I really need it.

I'm rather sure that there is no 5GHz interference. There are only a few 5GHz networks in the vicinity, and they use different channels.

So how often does this happen? If fairly frequent then surely you can turn off the TRENDnet for a bit just to see if it makes a difference. No?

@steveg: It's not frequent. It happens maybe once a day, maybe less often. But it's very annoying when you play an online game, and everything depends on how fast you react. Or when you are watching a movie and they are just about to kill the victim.

There's a lot less that will interfere on the 5GHz bands. Grab an app like Wifi Analyzer on Android or equivalent on iPhone and look at the channels. If the channel you're on is crowded you should be able to change the channel in the router settings and see if that helps.

May want to do a search for "technicolor router buffering problem". It appears buffer bloat could be causing it.

Like so many other things in the Computer based world, modems and routers seem to benefit from just being turned OFF, on a daily basis.
PC's too!

Besides believing in keeping my modem and two routers up to date, with the latest firmware updates, I also have them on a timer, that shuts them off every night between midnight and 6AM.
Even sometimes during the day, if I'm going to download a new ISO or some large file, I'll bounce the system (power off reset) which brings everything back to maximum efficiency.

I live out in the country, and all my communications are satellite based, both TV and Internet, so I'm subject to solar flares and all sorts of natural hate and discontent. A typical FL Thunderstorm, can have me totally out of communications for an hour or more.

So when I get knocked down, I just shake it off, pick myself up and keep going. That's life!

Good Luck, Y'all,
TM

@TechnoMage2021: I basically never switch the routers off, but I tried it when the problem became annoying. But it didn't change anything.

@neemobeer: I see now that there are other 5 GHz networks. They pop up and disappear. I'll experiment with the channels. The Technicolor is fishy. It seems that you can set up every fourth channel from 36 to 112 (36, 40, 44,...). But a WiFi Analyzer shows that very few channels are set up.

There are a lot of channels in the 5Ghz range, so it's a low chance there is interference. 2.4GHz can have a lot of interference from microwaves, electric motors and cordless phones.
