Microsoft has now gone back to its classic 3-year development cycle for new Windows versions.

There won't be a version 23H2 for W11, it's been dropped according to Zac Bowden (and remember, he was right about W11)... Instead, Microsoft has begun working the next release of the OS, dubbed Next Valley. And yes, this is a whole new major release. Not just a feature update.

I presume, judging from the codename, that it will be a "Windows 7-Like" refinement for W11.

It will probably keep the same hardware requirements, and also be a free upgrade.


Also, I believe its safe to say that this OS we are testing now on the Dev Channel is, in fact, Next Valley.

The clue is in name Windows 12.

More ads, lots of cosmetic garbage, zillions of emojis, editors to refuse words more than 6 letters, only videos aged 12 year old maximum to be allowed, pen utilities to be replaced by thick crayon utilities, logon sound to be replaced by "The wheels on the bus go round and round".

Anybody 13 or over will have to provide evidence of family members 12 or under to be permitted to use it (as a standard user - only 12 years old or under will be allowed admin rights)

On the negative side (or plus depending on view) - iphones will spontaneously combust if connected to Win12.

Lots of people will install Windows 12 and then make all kinds of hacks to make it look like Windows 11, 10 or 7. (Why does nobody want to make Windows look like Windows 8, I wonder?)

Lots of people will swear that their computer upgraded to Windows 12 completely on its own, forced upon them by Microsoft.

Lots of people will ask how they can prevent Microsoft from forcing them to upgrade to Windows 12 - and probably completely break Windows Update in the process.

Lots of people will be asking, within a week of its release, why they are not getting Windows 12 through Windows Update.

I expect it to include further limitations on the user-desired configuration-tailoring that is so unwelcome to corporate IT departments, who are MS's target customers [not us].

I also expect various Windows 12 prototypes to be 'leaked', for many of those prototypes to bear no relation to what it will actually be and for rumours about its capabilities & development & release timescales to be labelled as facts instead.

That MSN article linked above, just for example, claims that MS have "committed to a major release every three years" but, when you look at their supposed source, you discover that their source is just a rumour that they have "committed".
This is the same sort of rubbish that we went through in the lead-up to Windows 10.

For me, if it is stable, I don't care. I set a wallpaper, some colors and get to work/play using applications.

People will complain but as long as it is stable and people can run there software, windows 12 should have good adoption.

Spot on!! Denis. I think they will lock it down for all the tweaking, and make it very difficult (if not impossible) to run it on unsupported hardware. We've seen signs of it already. It won't surprise me if they lean more toward "windows as a service" either, maybe offering something like S mode for free but charge for full blown windows. Whatever they decide to do, I think it's been in a plan all along. It won't bother me, as what I have should last me for the time I have left, but for those who want the latest and greatest, we may see a culture shock.

Possibly an early step change towards the end of support for 32-bit software/code, given that 11 was the first release only made available as 64-bit. Apple has already made that move, partially on the grounds of efficiency savings and reductions in their support costs; and some Linux distributions also seem to be moving in that direction, although in most cases 64-bit Linux users can still activate 32-bit architecture support for software compatibility.
