What is codename Windows K2 for Microsoft to save Windows 11

 Windows Central:

In March, Windows president Pavan Davuluri confirmed plans to address serious "paint points" across Windows 11 that have eroded user trust and generated a wave of negative sentiment around the OS, spawned from Microsoft's relentless push into AI and enshittification while neglecting core Windows fundamentals such as performance and reliability.

Of course, what Microsoft says externally isn't always reflective of what it's really thinking internally, but in this case, my sources say the company is serious about turning Windows 11 into a platform that people are proud to use. By the end of 2026 and into 2027, Microsoft is striving to have Windows 11 in a much better place.

According to my sources, this effort is codenamed Windows K2. It’s a project that was put together in the second half of last year that addresses the biggest complaints that people have about Windows 11 today. Everything from an overabundance of AI features and bloat to performance issues and reliability mishaps will be tackled.

Windows K2 isn’t a dedicated release of the OS. Instead, K2 is an ongoing initiative that will ensure Windows quality remains both high and consistent across current and future versions, building an OS that is always focused on improvements to fundamentals to ensure foundational aspects of the platform are continuously strong.

Personally, my forecast is reserved. Microsoft is trying to attract users, that tells things aren't good. But things could change, for better or worse...

Considering the literal billions, perhaps trillions of different combinations of hardware, firmware, software, peripherals etc that are all just expected to work when you plug them in, it is a remarkable achievement that generally Windows does all that without any fuss.

Any of you been around long enough to remember Windows 3.1? You couldn't keep it running for much more than an hour before it would crash. You had to continually keep saving what you were working on or lose it.

Running Windows 11, my two machines are rock-solid and never crash. Assuming you are running quality hardware, it's a different world today.

And powerful AI models will only make all these situations worse and worse. Who knows, in-person bank transactions may experience a comeback. Same for in-store (brick and mortar) purchases. And paper bills and statements. And written correspondence. Back to the 70s.
We can only hope on all of that my friend.

What a lot of people missed was if you increment each of the letters in HAL one letter you get IBM. :-)

What a lot of people missed was if you increment each of the letters in HAL one letter you get IBM.

Well I missed that one, too. lol --- 😆

Yes i have :-)
I bought my first PC as a teenager 1987 an used Commodore PC 10-II. for my summer work money i did that summer. I still have that PC in working order.

I do not remember what MS-dos version i started with.. if it was 2 or 3..
I never used Windows 1 or 2. But i started with win 3.1 short after it came out. and i upgraded to win 3.11 the same day as release day more or less.
I cant say i remember win 3.1/3.11 crashed on me that often as you describe. :-)

Windows 2000 was the most stable and the best windows version ever made. I still like that version. :-)
I was a Microsoft fangirl until EOL of win7....... win8/8.1 was like win ME/vista.. a mistake OS and you just waited for next version to be better. 😅

Sadly win10/11 home/pro never became good. and i lost the trust in Microsoft
I'm working on to see if i can get a win2024LTSC version to play as nice as Windows 7.. Perhaps there is some hope left in the world.

@Marie SWE, in my experience the problems many users have with Windows 11 is running it on antiquated and inadequate hardware. In my 45 years of using Microsoft operating systems Windows 11 is the best, most reliable OS yet. And as always, Your Mileage May Vary.

My experience has been mostly reliable as well. My only issues are with the ads and constant shoving of microsoft services, but otherwise I agree.

There have been several reports of people having issues with windows updates, but I luckily never have that problem at work or on my custom built pc.

But maybe i'm just lucky. I have def seen the issues on other machines not mine or other companies having issues.

I did get hit with the reserved partition thing but besides that everything has been generally good.

My main issue with win10/11 home/pro is that it is a rolling OS... Every H version update breaks my deep system mods i do and have done all the way back to the win9.x era.

That is why i hope i can get win2024LTSC to work as its not an rolling OS. :-)
I have never complained on any OS hardware-wise.
Most often OS's if (windows or Linux) if you remove all stuff you dont need for your own workflow. most OS's speed up and become more lightweight and more responsive.
I often kill most background processes and set them to manual etc etc. I never understand the hype of boot-time and startup time.
People seem almost obsessed with how many seconds it take to start the computer. or how many seconds it take to start the browser.... darn.. if they are in so extreme panic hurry mode, they should never turn off their computers and never close down their programs and just let them run 24/7. *LOL* 🤣
I prefer low memory usage and less processes then hunting time. :-)

But... Out of the box experiences is important too, but that is more important for the normal non-tech-savvy person.

I too have been lucky with updates. I've been on W11 since release and in all that time, I've never had a Windows Update failure or problem.

We certainly have a different philosophy on operating systems and hardware. I like having high-end, premium computers with plenty of RAM. I like having totally clean, hack and modification free operating systems. But that's just me.

I'll be watching your project of trying to make Windows 11 fit your philosophy. I enjoy reading your posts.

Yeah.. being a one of the kind power-user do sucks now and then, as no OS in the world works well out of the box. ☺️
Not even Linux, i made my own version of Debian as Linux sucks out of the box. *lol* ☺️

Also when being curious about how things works deep inside the system and you dont have access to the source-code.. then you have to break it down part by part to see how it interacts with the different layers...
There is a saying, that might not survive a translation from swedish to english... You have to break it ten times over to learn how it works, its strengths and weaknesses.

So my little long term project is not only to get LTSC to work, (as it already is a good system).. but also to learn how it works behind the scenes and how i can make it even better for my use case, when i am into IT-Security and Privacy. not as a "hobby" but as future work as pentester and working with OSINT.
Windows have always been a vulnerable system as 99% of all black hat hackers target Microsoft OS's.. Not because its an easy target, but as 70ish% of the world computer users is using Windows.
But i have promised Brink in here to not go to deep in to IT-security(pentesting). So i have to be careful of how much i say. :-)
