I generated a new ISO using UUD for my version, DISM is running now. We'll see how that works out. I would just restore the backup, but I happened to do quite a bit of customization of several applications right after the weekly image backup, and I am trying to avoid making those changes again. My data is backed up daily, but that's on another logical drive.

WOW, I don't know if I believe the DISM run. It completed in a FLASH using the ISO! It only ran for three or four minutes!

That speed was so hard to believe that I ran a ScanHealth to see if it was real. I confess, I never ran DISM with an image ISO, but It sure happened in a hurry!

I knew that was too fast to be believable, and it probably was! It still thinks there's a problem.

Since I have the current ISO now, I'll just use it to do a repair install, that should get me going.

I've made some "Repair installs" in the past. For what I remember, the Win iso file must be the same version (for Ex Win 11 25h2) but not necessary the same build.
It will reinstall same Windows version and then update to last build

We have to be careful when tossing around terms, when describing what works and what doesn't work. "25H2" is a feature update designation, sometimes called a version designation or release designation. 25H2 refers to build 26200, so all 25H2 machines will be the same build.

Windows version numbers, like most Microsoft version numbers, are in the form of major.minor.build.revision, like so:

Unlike the AI-based answers above, I actually ran some experiments this morning with devices that were stuck on older versions. You can mostly* get by with using Windows installation files of an older revision, as long as the build is the same. I repaired several 24H2 machines this morning that were on revision 6899 [October 14, 2025], and they were repaired with media from revision 2314 [November 12, 2024]. Most of them worked; the ones that didn't were because....

* : I say mostly, because sometimes a driver or service will block the upgrade from going through. That's not really a problem with Windows Setup itself, just that driver or service saying, "no, don't do this."

Still, the simplest answer for media-based repairs is just use media that is the same or newer version.

Exactly what I said allegedly with wrong terms. Please don't play with the words. I made perfectly clear for everyone to understand that it has to be the same version, that is Windows 11 25H2, or more precisely 10.0.2600 but not necessarily the same build, that is currently the 9168 part or more precisely 10.0.2600.9168. In all the threads we discuss in this forum by version we mean 25H2 or whatever it is and by build we mean 9168 or whatever it is. Exactly the same terms used officially by Microsoft in the About Windows box when running the winver command. When not explicitly specified we always mean the general availability 25H2 which is 10.0.26200, not any Insider's variety. We never used the term revision. This term is usually mentioned for motherboards or other devices, for example mine is Asus P8H61 revision 1.0. So please don't pretend you don't understand and confuse others in order to have the last word. Everyone else has understood what I was saying perfectly well. See my other replies.

@spapakons I'm not sure why you take what I posted as directed at you, when you weren't even mentioned. I'm not pretending I don't understand; I'm clarifying what works and what doesn't, based on actual real-world experience, not gathered from asking an LLM.

But then you say things like, "precisely 10.0.2600 but not necessarily the same build." That last number is the build (and yes there's a typo in it, but it's clear what you meant). And then, "by build we mean 9168 or whatever it is;" That number is not the build. So you're contributing to the confusion.

You said, "Exactly what I said probably with wrong terms." I'm saying the terms matter, in listing out what works and doesn't. There are lots of terms bandied about, which creates the confusion. That's why I posted what I did about version numbers, to clarify. You can like it or lump it or ignore my posts.

Well, they didn't fix the issue. The repair install using the 25H2.9168 ISO also didn't correct it. Since Windows seem fine that there's not any indications of issues in the event log, I'm going to let sleeping dogs lie unless something changes.

Nope, still fails with the "can't find the files anywhere" after the repair install. I also pointed it at a local ISO copy of the 26200.9168 Windows, and it still "cant find the files anywhere". I'm at a loss what is going on. Oddly, nothing seems wrong with Windows operation, no alarms in event logs, and even SFC runs clean. I'm going to pull the ripcord and let things ride.

I chased down this rabbit hole with Google AI for fun, that was after I did an image backup so I didn't lose my place.

It actually did illuminate what is going on, but I never did get it fixed. It seems it's probably not the image store but some corruption in the registry. After a few attempts to disable things and fix it, I gave up and threw in the towel. However, that probably explains why the repair install wouldn't fix it, there's probably nothing wrong with the system image, and the repair install doesn't replace the registry stuff.

A DISM repair can replace missing, corrupted, or altered files in a target folder, and fix their file ownership and permissions. Those details are available from hidden manifest files in the WinSxS repository.

But a repair install will not alter the registry, because it could break any customizations or system changes that were made after installation. When you perform a clean install, Windows provides initialized registry values but those can immediately change as the system starts running.

If you corrupt the registry, you only get three practical choices:

1. Point-in-Time Restore (assuming you didn't corrupt key system settings that prevent you from running PITR)
2. Boot a recovery USB, and restore from a backup image
3. Clean install

I kinda' figured as much. I've spent enough time picking through the registry to know it's not a simple place to just "fix" something like this. When I realized it was a problem in the registry, that's when I also realized that I was tilting at windmills.

I remember in Windows 95/98 that each change to the system saved a Registry backup. If anything went wrong and Windows could not load you could boot into DOS and use the scanreg tool to restore an older version of the Registry and fix it. This in Windows ME and later was replaced by System Restore point which is disabled by default in Windows 11! When I reinstall Windows 11 on a computer I make sure I enable it precisely for these cases. So there is a restore point to go back to and fix any issues. Recently Microsoft introduced Point-in-time Restore. I haven't seen it yet, but I suspect it is very similar to System Restore. You could search for System Restore and see if there is any restore point to go back to, but since it is disabled by default, I'm afraid there isn't any. Also usually the last restore point might not work, try going back to the previous from last, if any.

I have system restore enabled, but since I saw this issue last month and "hoped" that the next update would fix it, I didn't invoke it at that time. Now there are only restore points from yesterday available. I'll probably restore a backup from before last month and then just apply any updates I'm missing.
