Hello,

I'm using my Zenbook laptop (2nd system) and I am annoyed by the name Windows decided to put down here:
1738166932091.webp

Where is it coming from?
The "Zenbook" name above is the one I typed in, but the one below... where is it coming from? Why is it duplicated?
Can I change it?

I know it's my model, but where is Windows reading it?
Reading it wrong, duplicated...

Thank you

You are very welcome!
Still, do you know where Windows reads this name from?
I had to create the string Model, so it was empty.

I installed a fresh copy of W11, so it's not even the Windows 11 preinstalled by ASUS.

Mine shows the motherboard model, it's a self built system, so at a guess its reading it from the firmware/BIOS.

So what happens if I change it there?
Well try it and you'll know.
.
.
.
See, it refreshes with each restart and goes back.
That is why you need the OEM reg. key.
All that info can be seen together by using msinfo32.exe

Have you tried clicking on Rename? I never changed my computer names so I don't know it that works or not.
I did that in the past: In that way you will change the upper name (like Zenbook in #1), but the name below it stays unchanged.
That's because it is an OEM name, that has been designated by the manufacturer/ assembler of the PC.
Mine says: 'Computer op Maat' (computer build on custom specs).

I never knew that could be changed and will not change it, because it does not bother me at all.

As long as I can change the upper name from the coded manufacture number name to an easily recognizable name I can quickly spot in my wireless network, etc. I'm happy. I'd be worried about causing conflicts changing that other name.

because your name is neat and clean, mine is messed, ugly, it's duplicated, nonsense. Hence the will to fix it. If it had the correct name, I wouldn't bother either.

See, it refreshes with each restart and goes back.
That is why you need the OEM reg. key.

Original post, I am not making you read every reply or post so the minimum necessary task to reply is to read the OP, of course. You are supposed to do that if you come here to reply, hopefully.

In the OP, not only there's a clear image and an arrow showing exactly my problem, but also I explain it right below:
"The "Zenbook" name above is the one I typed in, but the one below... where is it coming from?"

I typed it in with the "rename" option, of course, if you are replying to this thread I am hoping you already know that.

See how your suggestion of "Have you tried clicking on rename?" is nonsense?
If you take offense to me saying you read because you clearly didn't, then I take offense to you suggesting something I already mention I did in the OP.

1. Windows will read a specific BIOS location at boot time, and refresh "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\BIOS". Unless you can reflash your BIOS with a custom firmware image, the model info is hardcoded at the factory.

2. You're allowed to rename the displayed version in System Settings, and this separate key is stored under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OEMInformation". When Windows is first installed, the model name under HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION is copied to OEMInformation.

After that, you're free to change OEMInformation to whatever you like.

3. Why is "UX3402VA" listed twice? You'd have to ask ASUS. Sometimes OEM's will make a sub-model variant which differs from another one, and the repair tech needs to know which exact model.

Mine is shown as ASUS TUF Gaming A15 FA507RM_FA507RM. The only thing I see in BIOS is FA507RM. However, I suspect there is a lot of information that is stored in the BIOS that is not viewable in the BIOS interface. If I were you I would just leave it alone.
