This is a bit more complicated than what my question eludes to.

I have a single drive laptop with Win 11 on it and a cloned drive that also has Win 11 on it. I want to swap the cloned drive in as a primary drive but wanted to test it first. I set the UEFI to allow the USB to be the initial drive to boot. I think it booted, but am not sure if I am correct. The only indication I have is that I cannot eject the external drive.

Should be apparent which has booted by looking at your drive assignment. The booted one will have a windows tag on it

You could also run PowerShell with Admin rights and paste the following code into the window and press the Enter key and it will give you quite a bit of detail about your drives if wanted.

Powershell:

So it looks like the D: drive is the boot drive. Am I seeing this correctly? (I replaced some of the ID numbers with asterisks)

A little off topic, but are the unit badges in your signature units you served with?

So it looks like the D: drive is the boot drive. Am I seeing this correctly? (I replaced some of the ID numbers with asterisks)

I wouldn't rely 100% on that code as being correct about the boot drive. In my case it is true but only due to me playing around with a dual boot Linux - Windows build. When I reinstalled Windows last time it placed the boot partition on my D drive.

From an elevated admin command prompt, you can use DISKPART to gather this information to confirm.

Then type in the following and press the Enter key.

LIST DISK

Example
Code:
C:\>diskpart

Microsoft DiskPart version 10.0.19041.964

Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation.
On computer: COMPUTER

DISKPART> list disk

Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
  -------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
  Disk 0 Online 14 TB 0 B *
  Disk 1 Online 931 GB 1024 KB *
  Disk 2 Online 931 GB 1024 KB *
  Disk 3 Online 14 TB 1024 KB *
  Disk 4 Online 4657 GB 0 B *

You should have at least two disks. You need to select one of them so start with DISK 0 and press the Enter key after each line.

SELECT DISK 0
DETAIL DISK

You should then see something like the following

Current Read-only State : No
Read-only : No
Boot Disk : Yes
Pagefile Disk : Yes

Then type in the following to check the other disk

SELECT DISK 1
DETAIL DISK

You can type EXIT to get out or close the command prompt window.

Hope that helps
