I've been using LastPass Premium for some years but this thread has prompted me to think again about alternatives, including do I really need any third party solution at all? I've finally opted for an encrypted file on my own computer, completely removing my logon info for all sites from the internet. So accessing my secure sites would now require both possession of my computer and cracking a 17 character access password in unknown encryption software.

Any views on that?

My password manager is called little black book. If anyone finds my little black book I'm probably going to be in serious trouble, but that would require a few things: First of all, they would have to be in physical possession of my little black book. Secondly, they would need to know where I keep my little black book and thirdly, they would have to know how to read my little black book. I realize this is a likely Luddite approach to an old issue but as my mama once said, "if it ain't broke then don't fix it". Anyway, it works for me.

That is a pretty weak argument against using a browser's password manager. It's written by a journalist and cites three companies who sell password managers!

Keyloggers and trojans could equally be used to capture your master password. I have just had to tweak my Roboform settings as it was staying logged in all the time. The default should require a master password at each Windows login and, preferably, at each browser session and have a timeout.

In defense of Neil J. Rubenking, he has been in charge of PC Magazines security team for over 40 years. He's not just some journalist. I'm a charter PC Magazine subscriber and still own issue 1 No 1 from 1981. :-) I've followed Neil's writing and security application reviews for years and have always trusted his judgement.

I think that comparing browser password security to a password manager's serious industry standard zero-knowledge techniques is something that browser users either aren't considering or just don't care about.

The massive breach at LastPass was the result of one of its engineers failing to update Plex on their home computer, in what's a sobering reminder of the dangers of failing to keep software up-to-date

That's pretty lazy on the part of the Engineer not to update software on their home computer for a known vulnerability.
