I use the browser. I refuse to pay a monthly or yearly subscription for a password manager. Too many things are subscriptions. Especially when their security is pretty lackluster. It's a lot more of a honeypot situation for people to go after them then a browser. Zero trust isn't always true for these companies. None of the passwords stored there in my browser are for anything important. Everything bank related or whatever is all in my head.

That said, the browsers are not as bad as they used to be in storing passwords. You can now force them to require windows hello authentication to access them or fill them in, as well as encrypting them with your own private key before they are saved to the microsoft or google account. Passkeys are also well on there way to help reduce attacks.

I use BitWarden, it's free. I was paying for LastPass, but they started screwing up their browser extension where it wouldn't function properly, and I couldn't see paying them for that!

I have trouble storing a lot of truly random passwords in my head, it hurts so much!

Nope. I use passphrases. Makes it easier to remember. It's funny because I currently have a lot of memory issues, but luckily the passwords have stayed in my brain.

I was thinking about trying KeePassXC (desktop) paired with KeePassDX (Android) because I really dont need a manager for my PC but I'm starting to get lazy. I do use my browser for non-financial sites like this forum and Strava or Polar where you can lie on the details.
What I am using is an encrypted text file that's just a couple pages long and sorted by category. Most of them are only used a few times a year. Banks and email at the top and USPS and UPS types at the bottom.

I started using KeePass in 2004 and have over 500 passwords in it. A few months ago, I moved to KeePassXC, and I haven't looked back. It has a nice browser extension as well. On my Samsung tablet, I used Keepass2android for the four years I had it and thought it was fine.

My motivation for switching was the ease with which one browser can import the passwords stored in another. I never stored anything sensitive in Edge, but this promiscuity was a real turn-off. I deleted all my browser passwords and disabled the ability to save them in the browser. But I still have KeepPassXC so haven't lost anything.

On my iPhone, I use Apple's password manager, and I use iCloud Passwords on Windows to ease copying the ones I need to and from KeePassXC. I had previously used one of the KeePass-compatible apps for the iPhone, but I got sick of the freeware limitations, thought a monthly sub was ridiculous, and the forever license too expensive. And really, I don't actually need all the information I store in KeePassXC on my PC on my mobile devices, so it's arguably better this way.

I use KeePass on my PC and KeePassDX on my Phone/ Tablet. I synchronize the database using my own Nextcloud server.

I read the entire paper. Apparently, it's based on PoC (Proof of Concept) coding. In other words, they are saying, based on their research, they believe it is theoretically possible to derive a person's Master Password based on inadequate hashing algorithms used by some password managers.

It was interesting that it was noted in the D. addendum, that because 1Password adds an additional "secret key" that their PoC attacks would not be feasible with 1Password.

The additional "Secret Key" security was one of the reasons I chose 1Password, along with the way family vault access was implemented. I've used 1Password for two years and am quite pleased.

The hack was accomplished with a fake server. Surely there must be ways that users would not log in to a fake server unless the user was not dilligent?

It's a pretty valid concern. Look what happened when the Notepad++ update traffic was redirected. Users sitting at their PC didn't know that they had been redirected. So, imagine you use Password Manager XYZ, their server is compromised and it, obviously, has access to your encrypted vault. That's the picture they're painting.

you worded it much better than me. Thank you.

I had to deal with the notepad ++ in my environment. Luckily only had a few machines on it and updates were disabled on the version before all heck went loose.

I think password managers are a great idea, but your also putting all of your eggs in one basket, which is not a good idea. Especially when they are encrypted with the standards from the 90's.

For that reason, I want more adoption of passkeys than relying on passwords and other outdated security methods. Although the same could possibly happen there as well, but I think it could be a bit harder.

2FA on top of passkey should be pretty secure for now at least.
