I think password managers are a great idea, but your also putting all of your eggs in one basket, which is not a good idea. Especially when they are encrypted with the standards from the 90's.

AES 256-bit encryption is used by the US Govt and major corporations and has never been broken. I'd say that's a fairly secure basket.

Right. Even 128-bit is pretty good. Should password managers move on from CBC to GCM or CCM? Sure, probably, but CBC is fine if done correctly (given current attack hardware, of course; don't hold me to this in 10 years).

The attacks such as BEAST and POODLE were on CBC, but on CBC as implemented in old protocols. Notice almost no one uses SSL3 or TLS1 anymore? That's why. And I saw padding oracle mentioned somewhere in all this. If a system leaks whether padding is valid or invalid, attackers can decrypt ciphertext without knowing the key.

Short version: If you implement standards incorrectly, you're going to have a bad day.

It certainly is. Except that they were using AES-CBC. Instead of AES-GCM

Because of this, they were able to downgrade the security. Using legacy code that can be tricked into downgrading that encryption, therefore making it worthless. Which is what they did. You're paying money for them solely to keep one thing secure, and they cannot even do that correctly. The money is certainly there. If they got breached doing everything correctly, no problem. Nothing is perfect. But if I had a password manager and claimed it was secure, I would certainly be using the latest encryption standards as well as ensuring it was set up correctly.

It is only going to get worse as quantum computers come into the field, which is why we need stronger encryption and to get rid of passwords.

That is my understanding at least.

I feel good that they weren't able to compromise 1Password, my password manager of choice.

1Password not only lacks authentication of public keys, but also of public-key ciphertexts. This affects not only the security of the credential-sharing feature, but also the confidentiality of the entire vault.

    The only thing it lack is USB-3.2 on the front face but it has 3.0 on the back
Well, if you took all the "Onedrive" threads and put them together, I'd wager the total exceeds 155 pages. We're not seeing as many as we were, but I cringe every time I see the word 'onedrive' in a new thread. Sorry @TraderGary. I know how much you love it. :lmao:

@glasskuter, as you know, you can only "love" OneDrive if you fully understand how it works and how to set it up to work for you and not against you. Unfortunately, very few understand how OneDrive works. If you don't understand how it works, OneDrive can easily cause data loss. Particularly for those that don't have a good backup strategy, and unfortunately most people don't. If that's you, it's best to turn OneDrive OFF and remove it.

Well..., you can explain it away whatever way you want, but, not every average user is a OneDrive pro like you are! As a matter of fact, very few are!
The fact that remains is, the way MS implements it, is wrong!

They don't. That's been what I have disliked so much about it. They are not given a choice or an explanation. We sometimes forget that the majority of those who come here ARE noobs, at least with Windows 11. . There are not nearly as many geeks like us as there are noobs.

No, it's not. I don't want my comment to start a discussion about the good and bad of Onedrive. We've been there, done that. I only mentioned it in response to your post #309 about how long threads like this one can go on; so long there's no way a reader will read it all,
and how the same question can be asked time and again and we have to type the same responses..
