Which Windows 11 Insider Channel?

Beta, Dev or Canary for testing in VM?

How proficient are you with Windows?
Beta channel builds are more stable than Canary or Dev builds. Dev channel builds are ahead of other channels but are more unstable. Canary channel is for testing latest development ideas and therefore unstable.
Beta builds are pre release so they are more stable and have a lot less issues associated.

I have read comments that people have been moved from Dev to canary without requesting to be and have then moved back to Dev.
I have read that to stop getting Canary (or Dev) channel previews you have to do clean install of Windows 11 or restore from a disk image (which you should make before proceeding) I do not know if this is true.

For the simple fact that you have to ask, perhaps you should try the Beta build?

Yes, you must clean install to go to a lower build such as from Canary / Dev to Beta or as @antspants says restore from a fresh image (Macrium has saved me on numerous occasions!).

Not sure about the being moved channels without asking though.

It took me a while to find it. I was reading this Reddit a few months ago. Personally I have never had any wanting to actually do it although I did sign up for insiders but have never installed. Because my interest is low, I haven’t really put any effort or passion to want to understand it properly.


People made comment of being moved, maybe it had something to do with this:

2023: If you want to try possible future Windows features and interface changes and give Microsoft your feedback, as well as help the company ship faster by testing across a wide range of hardware, the Windows Insider program’s new Canary Channel lets you choose how early a look you want to get at those features, based on how comfortable you are with builds that might not be stable. The Canary Channel replaces the old Dev Channel.


But like I said, because I currently have no wanting to try it (Windows gives me enough trouble already) my understanding is very limited.

Dev is recommended for most users. Once the Canary channel jumps to a higher build, you can't go back to Dev without doing a clean install of Windows.

At the few times of the year, when the channel builds align, you can switch to any channel.

I prefer the Canary builds but that doesn't mean it's the right for you. You have to be the one to decide what Insider channel is right for you.

Put each version in a virtual drive (vhdx file) and create boot entry for each, and you can run them all if you wish (one at a time of course).

Sadly, the Insider Programme is not as exciting as it was due to the lack of imagination of the development team - Copilot is so overhyped, it is unreal. I have yet to find a single case where it has impressed me an iota.
