Why did the laptop battery empty?

I have a Lenovo Legion laptop and a Synology NAS. Both are connected to my Eaton 5E850iusb UPS. I bought the UPS in 2021.

My UPS is failing. Last month when the electricity cut the UPS and the NAS suddenly switched off and then the UPS switched on when the electricity came back. That means that the electric relay switch on the UPS is failing because it didn't switch from AC mode to battery mode when the power cut. I ordered a new UPS and it should arrive soon.

Before when I woke up my Lenovo laptop from sleep it sometimes said that battery was empty on the welcome screen and the charging light of the laptop was not blinking when that happened. The laptop shut down when I signed in so I switched it on. It said that the battery was full when I switched on the laptop. Thus the battery was empty on the welcome screen is a wake up from sleep glitch.

Yesterday night I closed the laptop lid before I slept. Today morning when I went to my laptop I saw that the charging light of the laptop was blinking when the laptop lid was closed. I opened the laptop lid and the charging light of the laptop stopped blinking. It said that the laptop battery was empty on the welcome screen and then the laptop shut down so I switched it on. It said that the battery was 0%. I shut down the laptop and I waited a bit and I switched it on. The battery was empty. I disconnected the power wire that goes from the laptop power adapter to the UPS and I connected another power wire that goes from the laptop power adapter to the wall socket and I switched on the laptop. It started charging and it said 20%. I went back to the previous power wire that was connected to the UPS. The laptop continued to charge and now the battery is full.

Another thing is that the Synology NAS was on when I saw that the charging light of the laptop was blinking when the laptop lid was closed.

Also I have an HP 15 laptop. Sometimes when I closed the laptop lid of the HP laptop at night and the laptop slept and I unplugged the power wire then in the morning I found the laptop off because the battery became 0% when the laptop lid was closed so it shut down during the night. That happens every few months and it's because of a sleep bug

I want to ask why did the battery of the Lenovo laptop became 0% today and why was the charging light of the laptop was blinking when the laptop lid was closed? It could either because of a UPS issue or it's the same sleep bug which happened on the HP 15 laptop.

If it's because of the windows sleep bug that happened on the HP laptop and that caused the battery to become 0% during the night on the Lenovo laptop then how come the laptop didn't charge after the battery became empty? That doesn't make sense.

It could because of a UPS issue like maybe the UPS socket that the laptop is connected to was failing. I think that explains why the laptop wasn't charging and it charged and became 20% when I connected the laptop directly to the wall socket by using another power wire. I connected the laptop to a different UPS socket as a precaution.

Consider running the Lenovo diagnostics
Is there a need to do those tests? My Lenovo laptop is still new and it has no hardware problems. The battery becoming 0% is either because of a UPS issue or a sleep bug. Modern sleep is broken and it has a lot of issues. The diagnostic tests won't catch UPS issues or modern sleep issues.

do you have 'fast startup' enabled
control panel > power options
on the left side > change what the power button does

if fast start up is enabled please disable it and restart your system
with it enabled it stops systems from entering full sleep mode
which could be why your battery is draining.

best of luck Steve ..

Beat me to it... someone ought to warn people not to put a new laptop into any kind of bag or case unless they do the above first... Batteries are expensive. About 30% of the indicated wear level happened in the first two weeks of owning my machine because I thought "Shutting Down" still meant power off.

None. Manully configured so nobody except me can change any critical system files. (Don't ask how, it's probably against some rule somewhere)
Use Hibernate, that uses the least power.

Power button, Close Lid functions, you can configure in the Power Options, Hibernate rather than Sleep.

These are not bugs but a matter of configuration and the reasons why. Googling around will make it appear there are numerous "bugs","issues" which are largely non-existent.

Lenovo Vantage Diagnostics.
On my Lenovo the Diagnostics seem to be slightly flawed. Failure is sometimes indicated in MOBO PCI/PCI-e Test. But there has never been any problem. I attribute this to the complexities of the Optimus Laptop hardware arrangement and/or flaws in the diagnostics.

I have never had a UPS, so no comment.

That is probably due to charging to 70% rather than wear. Try charging to 100% then see the wear level.

It is charged to 100% of its remaining designed capacity. 30% of which was lost in the first two weeks I owned the laptop in my specs. It is absolutely due to pressing the power button, waiting for the black shutdown screen, and putting my laptop in a bag, only to have it power back up and drain the battery, overheating it in the process. That has not happened since I disabled S0 through S4

I’ve been using Hibernate since day one, and my laptop (Lenovo Legion Slim) is just over two years old. The laptop charger is practically always plugged in. In Lenovo Vantage, I’ve set the maximum allowed Charge Level to 80%. But I definitely should have been better about unplugging the charger every now and then so the battery can discharge.
