When I hover up on system tray net icon, I find the ssid name of the router wireless connection, instead of usual network I see in my previous version of windows , say windows 7. The connection is wired lan, but the wireless ssid is shown here and also in the network, Ethernet connection name in settings .
Do I need to change anything. Am I miss something . please

Perhaps like my latest yours also has the Wireless Adapter, can show the Router for Wi-Fi even if not logged onto it. I disabled the Wireless adapter in my Desktop in Device Manager, Network Adapter as it is using the Ethernet connection.

Hi, berton, I already disabled in the network settings and checked in device manager. the status of wireless adapter shows as disabled. I think, that something other causes this .

Yea i've been having the same problem ever since i upgraded from Windows 10 to 11.

adap.jpg

So the "Network Name" of "LAN Wifi network" is my test SSID for the wifi. But as u can see in the pic above my Ethernet (wired) connection adopts its name PERMANENTLY. So even if i disconnect my wifi or even disable it my Ethernet nic will now permanently show "LAN Wifi Network" which is obviously wrong. It should just say "Network" which is my ethernet network default name.

I've roamed everywhere and you will typically find MOST will just cut/paste a response saying just right-click your Ethernet and rename it which is obviously missing the whole point of your question since that just renames the Adapter not the Network.

Back in Windows 7 and lower there was a house (or bench) icon in Netowrk Sharing Center which you could click and then rename the Network to whatever you wanted. It seems Microsoft has dropped that ability and when u look in the center you will see this icon is missing.

So far it seems the only option i can find, which is a terrible solution is to go to secpol.msc under Network List and dclick the ssid that the ethernet is using and change its name. The terrible part about this apporach is now that wifi, no matter whoever it connects to, will always show this same static name you gave...not just your Ethernet. Ugggh!

I am still looking for a way to to set my Ethernet's network name to a static name (it was just called "network" before this nonsense began) while allowing my wifi to continue to show whatever ap they connect to for their network names. Apparently in Windows 10 or higher this is not possible anymore, which is just plain stupid. Oddly, i dont recall this ever being a problem in Windows 10.

Btw, the only other (bad) "solution" some have given online was to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles\ and under the GUID key there is a "ProfileName" and when that changes it affects the network name shown for Ethernet/wifi...but once again this doesnt solve the problem it just hides it with consequences. And it is also what the secpol.msc is already doing so its the same dumb solution, just a different method.

At this point i think i am giving up because ive spent 8 hours and every response i can find is just one of those 3 (rclick Rename, secpol.msc, or registry's ProfileName) but all 3 dont solve the problem because the people cut/pasting these same answers aren't thinking about it, they are just looking to get the karma points.

This is normal for laptops or desktop computers with Wi-Fi connection. Once you connect to the wireless network the LAN takes its SSID as both are at the same network. I have seen it in Windows 10 too. You should be able to rename it if you go at Control Panel, change to icons view to see each control separately rather than in groups, and open Network and Sharing, Network adapters properties. You should see the individual network adapters and you should be able to rename LAN.

Your first sentence is correct. It's a normal quirk by Windows -- adopting the wifi's SSID as the Ethernet name (since ethernet doesnt have a name given by a router) despite a network can, and usually does, have more than one SSID (e.g. 2.5Ghz + 5Ghz). So it seems Windows just adopts the very first SSID that the pc's wifi is connected to and then keeps it permanent for Ethernet even if there are other SSIDs on said network. Not elegant, nor helpful but it is what it is. Just glad to know my PC isn't f--ked. Just bad underlying coding logic. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Btw, I think you are referring to the Adapter Name not the LAN Network Name. Its the Network name where the issue lies -- cant be renamed, at least without affecting the wifi name too. In Windows 7, right on the Network Sharing Center page, was how to change the Network Name, not at the individual network adapters area that u mentioned -- that is just how you change the adapter names.

But again, not a big deal as Mister and others have pointed out. Just a minor visual nuisance and peculiar behavior of Windows. Again, i understand the SSID is part of the network (ethernet and wifi apart of the same router), but the SSID represents the wifi connection not an ethernet connection so it just looks confusing and bad UX design.. Windows is able to detect when its connected via ethernet so by default it should adopt a generic name like: Network for ethernet, never the wifi SSID which will always confuse people at first (they will think they are connected via wifi when they're not). Just my 2cents. Mac and Linux distros (that ive used) does not do this odd behavior.

For corporate networks, it makes sense to display the corporate network name to know that you are connected there. You could have renamed the Wi-Fi to Home or whatever and it would display that to remind you are connected at Home. You could copy the network name and search it in Registry. There should be a key holding the wireless network name and another holding the wired. Backup this key, just in case, and then try renaming to what you want. I did a similar trick once to change the generic description of my old CPU to the actual model so it would appear correctly in System Properties.

It's normal unless you make changes in local security policy or the registry. Whether you are connected wired or wirelessly is determined by what icon Windows puts in the system tray, not by the name of the network. Even if one has both wired and wireless adapters available and an ethernet connection is detected, wired always takes priority over wireless. Windows is smart that way.
If it bothers you that much, you can change it. How to Rename or Change Network Name in Windows 10 & 11

That's why I keep a text file for every useful hack where it contains the method, any code used and other details. When I need to do that again, I hardly remember what to do, unless I do that often. I open the relevant text in Notepad and follow the instructions.

What if you forget to look back at your previous note? Then when you find the solution again you will make a new note. This could happen again and again. :eek1:
