Wi-Fi Connection ?

I use Windows11 Insider Preview and have WiFi access. Just so the OP knows WiFi works.

Define too well. I never heard of such a thing with WiFi...

It's been around for a long time. Auto connect and remember networks was created specifically for people who move constantly from one Wi-FI SSID to another and did not want to have to manually reconnect every time they moved.

Unfortunately, it can also lead to situations just like WinUser's situation, where it does what it thinks is best.

I use a Google Wi-Fi Mesh inside my AT&T fiber Residential Gateway for my home network. But since I also had to set up the RG itself, I have the Wi-Fi info stored in my machines, as in the basement, the RG's Wi-Fi is much stronger than the Mesh, which are on the main and second floors.

But sometimes, and usually whenever Google pushes an update to the Google Wi-Fi mesh system, my machines that are on Wi-Fi only connections will auto connect to the available Wi-Fi signal from the RG because the mesh is 'down' - even though it is only down temporarily. In my case, though, when that happens, it's not too much later that it switched back to may mesh system when it is available again, and even being 2 floors down, the RG signal is still strong enough to be usable on the second floor, so it is much, much less noticeable.

I have tried all suggestions. Everything I try I have to wait and see if it works. I can understand that there may be times that the Wi-Fi connection gets disconnected. I don't understand why Windows occasionally refuses to forget the password to log in. For now Windows hasn't connected to a different connection. I wouldn't mind being automatically connected to my Wi-Fi extender if it wasn't for the speed lose. One good thing, Even though Windows can see my neighbors Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi from my printer it doesn't try to connect to them.

I have another question about known Wi-Fi connections. Does all my devices being connected to my MS account have anything to do with what Wi-Fi connections are shown as being available? I have a brand new desktop that has never been connected to my Netgear router but it was listed in known networks. I had retired my Netgear router and switched to the Comcast Modem/Router/ VOIP before I bought this computer.

Yes it does. My problem is that Windows is like a elephant. It never forgets.

Yes. I found the same thing, my desktop showing connections that only my work laptop had ever been exposed to.

No. Just because you have a Microsoft account doesn't mean it cares what Wi-Fi network you connect to. As long as you present the correct credentials when you log into your Microsoft account that's all that matters. That said, if the Wi-Fi connection is iffy and Windows Security catches it, it may complain, but that's Windows, not your Microsoft account.

Anyone trying to tell you differently is simply making things up.

And I have to disagree with you about Windows never forgetting a connection even when you don't want it to remember it. All you have to do is right click the connection you're currently connected to and choose "Forget".

Here's a Verizon how-to: Windows 10 - Forget Wi-Fi Connection. It does work as I've used it to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connection issues.

He said showing as being *available*, agreed. But, I took that to mean in the Managed known networks, because in his example, his new desktop was never around for the Netgear he sees, which means he is not referring to actually available Networks, but those in Known network list.

So, Not under Show available networks but rather under Manage known networks. - In manage known networks, unless you don't share date across devices through your Microsoft account, you will be shown networks even if your device has never accessed it.

And as I mentioned, this is actually true. Even though the Wi-Fi connection from my office is obviously not here, and my desktop has never been to my office, my desktop shows my office WiFi as a possible choice for Wi-Fi connections.

I said it before and I'll say it again. I do choose the Forget option and Windows will still randomly connect to the network without me entering any password. I'm all ears if you want to explain how my retired Netgear router was listed when this computer was never connected to it.

Yes that is correct. Somehow, someway my desktop found that I use to have a Netgear router connected to my other devices.

I do appreciate you taking time to help me. I know you are right about selecting the forget the network should do just that and not log back in without me entering the password. I have no idea why it didn't work. On a good note since the last network changes I made my wife's laptop and my desktop have not changed the network connection.
