Will I be able to update to WIN 11?

But I like my 8 track cartridge, Betamax video, Carburettors, Cathode Ray Tubes, Slide Rules etc. These will never be obsolete.

I just helped my son wall-mount a 55" TV in his room - it felt lighter than those 27" CRT's back in the day... LOL

I believe the problem is that he doesn't have access to the refurbished computer since he's contemplating buying it.

Not much point to running that check. The CPU presumably will never be supported. The machine may date from 2012. The latest drivers offered for it are for Windows 8.1. (I expect that it'll be fine under Win10.) I don't know whether it has any of the Device Security features that Win 11 wants.

It would make the most sense to install 10. It'll be fully supported for almost 4 years, and it will probably receive critical security updates long after that. By that time the PC will be 13 years old, and probably won't be adequate as a gateway to the Metaverse.

My question is will I be able to update to WIN 11?

thanks

I think yes, perhaps. For the time being, at least.

But with almost certainty, you will wake one morning, only to find yourself 'up an unsanitary tributary, without a means of locomotion'.

Metaphorically speaking, of course.

That being said, the PC you described is by no means, a slouch. If it suits your needs and fits into your current budget, go for it. Drive the wheels off it (running WIN 10 Pro), for four (4) years, then do as you will.

Just an opinion. Best of luck to you.

Carefully, again, heed the advice below, written by Bree.

Not without using one of the known workarounds to bypass the system checks on installing or updating to Windows 11.

While almost anything will run Windows 11 at present and continue to get all the W11 updates (just look at System Two in 'My Computers' below this post) there is no guarantee that this will continue to be the case. In fact, Microsoft specifically warn that updates may stop at some time in the future.

Unless you are prepared to take the risk that you may need to reinstall Windows 10 some time down the line, then I recommend you stick to Windows 10 on this PC.

Just did a fresh install of an Intel i7- 3610QM 16GB / 256 WD 256GB SSD. Its doing fine and is very usable. I don't use it for gaming or CAD so there are really no issues. The machine has served me well and it still has a Windows 7 sticker on top. Its a Sony All In One. Some quirks - Atheros AR3012 Bluetooth chip isnt supported but a USB dongle mouse will do just fine. No other issues.
