What generation is the CPU?

And, when was it "born"?

Hi,
Sure you'd have to use disable cpu checks because it's not supported.

You need to make use of bypass tweaks to install 11 because the CPU on you devise isn't on the supported list for Windows 11

I have one of those. Are you sure it is a wise purchase? They tend to be a bit noisy because the tiny fans spin so fast , and expel blasts of cold air through the front. That is why I dont use it. There is a strong draft coming at you all the time. That is with minimum fan setting in bios. The desktop/tower version probably doesnt have the same annoyance.

Phil changed the fans for much slower ones: all the work and parts he put in, he might as well have bought a better machine..

I'd suggest to look in the manual (if you don't have a printed copy, try to get PDF on manufacturer's website) and look at the CPU compatibility table, which the most modern CPU this motherboard can support. Then compare it to official CPU list of Windows 11 and make conclusion. Maybe you are lucky and simple upgrade can solve this most important incompatibility. But more probably it's better to keep PC as is with Windows 10 and planning to buy a more modern PC in the near future.

We know it's a third gen processor and we know that they're not supported by 11.. only a few 7th gen are supported and you need an 8th gen or higher to use 11.

Also I doubt the motherboard supports TMP2. So there are a number of things that will have to be bypassed to run 11 on that particular device.

I have to agree.. if that were mine I would use 10 since it's going to be around for 4 more years and you don't have to hack your way around to use 11. In the end of the day it's up to each user to decide on what to use.

That's so right Jeff, I only say that because of the experience I had with an Old incompatible machine, albeit back in the early days of the dev channel when you could put 11 on any machine

I guees it's 3rd gen. 3770 Would that make sens? As to the DOB, ???
I would say that since the requirements are (very specific 7th generation and 8th generation at the very least), if it's 3rd generation it doesn't qualify for Windows 11. That said, a 3rd generation processor says to me that it will definitely lack TPM 2.0 and other requirements.

If it were me, I'd pass on that one.

BTW, I just looked for refurbished computers at Amazon. com and found that none of the advertised refurbished computers showed the generation of the processor. Red Flag for me! Neither did I see anything saying "Windows 11 ready".

When looking for a refurbished computer, make sure it's 8th generation or later and that it has TPM 2.0. I'm a bit confused about which AMD processors qualify, but that's a consideration also.

Finally, here's a list of Microsoft's requirements directly from Microsoft:

Good luck in your quest; from what I've seen so far, you will need it.

I plan to purchase a Refurbished HP Elite 8300 SFF Desktop, Intel i7 3770 3.4GHz/16GB /NEW 960GB SSD+1TB/ DVD/ Win10 Pro/Fast AC 600 WiFi USB
My question is will I be able to update to WIN 11?
Not without using one of the known workarounds to bypass the system checks on installing or updating to Windows 11.

While almost anything will run Windows 11 at present and continue to get all the W11 updates (just look at System Two in 'My Computers' below this post) there is no guarantee that this will continue to be the case. In fact, Microsoft specifically warn that updates may stop at some time in the future.

Microsoft said:
The following disclaimer applies if you install Windows 11 on a device that doesn't meet the minimum system requirements:

This PC doesn't meet the minimum system requirements for running Windows 11 - these requirements help ensure a more reliable and higher quality experience. Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues. If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and won't be entitled to receive updates. Damages to your PC due to lack of compatibility aren't covered under the manufacturer warranty.

Unless you are prepared to take the risk that you may need to reinstall Windows 10 some time down the line, then I recommend you stick to Windows 10 on this PC.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

Given the specs he listed in the first post my bet it will not pass.
Yes, but why guess, OP can check it with the Microsoft app.

Why such old hardware? Cheap can be expensive in the long run (tech is never golden oldie, it's just rusty, clunky oldie).

Bear in mind, as MS has highlighted with Win 11, the newer the hardware the better the security... my suggestion is change your plan on that one.

But I like my 8 track cartridge, Betamax video, Carburettors, Cathode Ray Tubes, Slide Rules etc. These will never be obsolete.
