windows 11 22h2
So I never received the update package to 22H2 through windows updates and had finally to resort to using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant and installing manually. The I was very pleased that I managed to get the update but found that the Explorer tabs had not been enabled (probably because I had had QTTabBAr installed and forgot to remove that before updating).

I removed QTTabBar (manually in the end as the uninstall failed) and then enabled the new File Explorer features using Vivetools (vivetool /enable /id:37634385, vivetool /enable /id:39145991, and vivetool /enable /id:36354489 - actualy one of the first two was already enabled so I did not run it, and the last one was a feature number not found in my configuration but I ran it anyway and it reported success). All well and good, tabbed file explorer working (or so I thought).

Now comes the issue. I have File Explore set to open windows in the same window, and double click to open). And when I first start windows, I get that behaviour in File Explorer. But once windows have run for a while and I have done some things (create slides in PowerPoint and the like - nothing major) File Explorer starts opening new windows every time I double click on a folder in the min window (single clicking just selects the folder but does not open it)) and so the program gets noticeably slower and I end up with many many File Explorer windows (one on top of the next). I have noticed, when this happens, if I single click a polder on the folder tree pane, File explorer opens the folder in the main windows, but that can be a pain as the folders are often collapsed so it is easier to click on folders I want to navigate to in the main window. Anyway, It makes File Explorer rather unresponsive and messy to use. I am contemplating disabling the tabbed File Explorer option again or perhaps reverting to 21H2 but wonder if anyone else has come across similar behaviour and if anyone knows what might be causing it and knows of a way to fix it.....
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Many thanks Boz

Looks like that computer has sufficient operating power so I'd run sfc /scannow in a Command Prompt as Administrator window to check for file issues then a full/deep antivirus scan.

Thanks. Did that just prior to installing 22H2 but will run it again. Current behaviour is to open separate windows when double clicking on a folder in the files and folders pane (regardless of teh opyinin of whether to open new filders in same or in new window) but single clicking only selects the folder (ie does not expand it). Double clicking on a folder in the navifagtion pane seems to open that folder in the folders and files pane and expand the folder in the navigation pane to the next level - but this is not the way I have used Explorer in the past... And, on this occasion, I just started Windows 11 and did not do anything but left it on for a while before trying File Explorer... I have also removed the option for id:36354489 in vivetools as that was not present when I checked before enabling the file explorer tabs (Ie I have reset that to its default state) but that did not change anything (as far as I cn tell....).
I'll try sfc again (but it has never found anything amiss on my system - still, there is always a firts time...).
Thanks again and best wishes, Boz

still no fix to the issue with File explorer. I'm wondering if it might be something to do with QTTabBar having been installed prior to the update to 22H2... (I removd it only after the upgrade - and had to uninstall it manually). I have also noticed that my address bar pull down window is always totally empty so something is definitely not quite right - and if File Explorer has too many windows open, that will make it very sluggish... Anyway, on the verge of uninstalling 22H2 and then maybe trying to reinstall it again afterwards... (or wait for the next update)...

Hi, I discovered this thread by looking for a solution for this exact same issue. I have found many people that have previously downloaded QTTabBar (including myself) and are experiencing this problem yet nobody seems to have a solution, it is really frustrating because no matter what I try (and everyone else including you) nothing seems to fix it and nobody seems to know what exactly is causing it apart from the fact that everyone with this problem appears to have used QTTabBar at some point.

so I guess most of us are just going to have to wait it out until someone more experienced figures it out :/

I FOUND A FIX:
I literally just followed step #1 and step #2 and then restarted file explorer using task manager, it literally only took 1 minute, hope this helps!
