Win 11 install on Compaq cq60 not working

I’ve done a few installs for friends of mine of win 11 on unsupported hardware with no problems at all.

I have a mint condition compaq cq-60 that I put a new Samsung evo 860 500gb SSD in it.

I made my usb installation media with RUFUS 4.1. I have to use MBR not GPT because if I use GPT I get this black screen with an error about legacy boot mode and Uefi. Okay no big deal… wipe out the usb, reformat, reinstall the modified win 11 iso file etc….

Boot up, select the language, skip product key for now, and… This pc cannot install windows 11.

Shut down, reboot, hit shift and f10 at the language screen. Regedit

I put in the common registry edits make sure I’m up to par with all the YouTube videos. Click out of that, type exit into the command prompt. Skip the product key, and same thing. This pc cannot install windows 11.

Despite having all the key requirements bypassed… could it be that the processor and ram just in general do not like the file requiring a RAM and processor upgrade? There are RAM and processor upgrades for these, not much.

What CQ60 model is it?

I wonder whether it's UEFI capable?

I installed Win 10 X64 on my old (2008) CQ50-105NR, after I max'd out the RAM (4GB). I swapped in a 120GB SSD, back when they still cost roughly $1 per gigabyte. It was a bit of a struggle, as I had to force install some drivers. Athlon X2 CPU, nVidia motherboard chipset. (It had a discrete GPU, though. nVidia GeForce 8200M.) The machine awaits recycling. I suppose that I could try an 11 upgrade on it, just for fun. But it seems like an impractical exercise.

I've never bothered with Rufus, the usb for 23H2 made by the MCT can boot in both Legacy or UEFI mode. The only addition I make to the install usb is to add a little batch file that I can run to make the registry changes.

That is when I hit Shift+F10 and run my .bat file.

At the OOBE setup, if I want a local account I use Shift+F10 then the command OOBE\BYPASSNRO

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds as native boot vhdx.
what are you using to write the batch file and how are you integrating it into the install file?

You can copy the text from my post above, paste it into Notepad, and save as SkipChecks.bat. Put this on the install usb.

As I said, at the 'choose language' screen I use Shift+f10 to bring up a command prompt, then run the .bat file. Then just carry on with the install as normal.

I think the op might like to know precisely how to run the batch file from booted pe.

You can get it to run automatically by inserting the batch and winpeshl.ini into boot.wim using 7-zip. Only takes a few seconds to do.

I posted that so long ago I cant remember where the post is.

Tis here Reports today that Windows11 TPM can be bypassed with Registry hack
