Win 11 x 64 Home on PC . Pro Win 11 x 64 on Surface 9.
I have been waiting for Win 11 for a good 5 months now, nothing in Win update. My son, who is staying here for a week from Cyprus, when I mentioned it, said he has Win 11 and likes it. He said he did not wait for notification. (He works in IT there) He 'clicked a button' in Microsoft site and downloaded and installed it. Oh good I said, I dont understand this 'iso' thingy. He said no, its just does it. I went into MS and a button says get Win 11. Erm, no You dont, all it says is how wonderful Win 11 is????? So - where the hell is this magic button and why cant I see it (in UK) - are we at the bottom of the 'new order'?????

I have been waiting for Win 11 for a good 5 months now, nothing in Win update.

Microsoft said at the launch that it would be a phased rollout, and that not everyone with an eligible device would see it offered straight away. They said they expected it to take until mid-2022 before the rollout had reached everyone.

why cant I see it (in UK) - are we at the bottom of the 'new order'?????

No, I'm in the UK and was offered it a couple of weeks after the launch.

So - where the hell is this magic button and why cant I see it

The ISO is one way to get it, quite easy to use, and probably the most reliable method. Instructions here:

But it's not the only way. I think the 'magic button' your son is referring to is the Installation Assistant. Tutorial here:

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

Another thing, see if your W10 is installed in W11 friendly manner. TPU (fTPU in BIOS) enabled, installation in UEFI type instead of CSM/legacy.

You can upgrade at will as long as your PC meets all the requirements. The "wait" is generally for old PCs because it performs a system scan to make sure it meets the system requirements before upgrading and for those who have no idea what they are doing. We here know what we are doing so you're in good hands.

Windows' use of PINS freaks me out a bit. I've read too many horror stories about them getting messed up with no way to log onto your PC, and now that Windows 11 insists on TPM, it makes PINS freakier (to me at least).

I found this, but it says if upgrading WAIT till Update tells you to use it.

As with every Windows 10 rollout before, in a few rare cases there are known issues with certain hardware drivers or installed software. MS places a Compatibility Hold on delivering it through Windows Update to those machines affected by this. That is why you are advised to wait. Such issues are listed here:

However, the vast majority of those waiting for it to be offered have no such issues, it just hasn't got round to their turn yet.

Dopey question - To upgrade to Windows 11, do you need to be using a PIN instead of a password?

No, for an upgrade from W10 to W11 you will end up with exactly the same account(s) and password(s) that you had in Windows 10. If you only use a local account with no password, then you'll still have a local account with no password in W11.

Now a clean install, that's a different matter. Only Pro offers the option to set up with a local account. In Home you are required to use a MS account, but then a clean install of Windows 10 Home does the same thing. There are workarounds for this though.

My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 4GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Beta as native boot vhdx.

My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 4GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus the Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds as a native boot .vhdx.
"No, for an upgrade from W10 to W11 you will end up with exactly the same account(s) and password(s) that you had in Windows 10. If you only use a local account with no password, then you'll still have a local account with no password in W11."

Bree: Thank you! That's what I wanted to hear. I use a local account with a password on Windows 10 Pro. Even though I huffed and puffed about my partner's PC being forced to upgrade to Windows 11 the other day (which I think I've thwarted for now), I may do the upgrade this weekend on my own machine.

If you make a system image with Macrium Reflect Free (or similar) before you start, then you'll have an easy way back if you don't like 11.

:lmao: how true...

I have both, I run W11 on my supported devices and stay with W10 on those that are not. On the whole I prefer W11, but not so much that I'd force an unsupported install on my incompatible devices (except for test purposes).

Yes, there are some GUI changes that divide opinion, and some Start/Taskbar functionality that is missing (for now at least, some is reappearing in the latest Insider Dev builds). I find I can live with either OS. As far as software compatibility goes there's little or no difference.

Windows' use of PINS freaks me out a bit. I've read too many horror stories about them getting messed up with no way to log onto your PC, and now that Windows 11 insists on TPM, it makes PINS freakier (to me at least).
Pins are much safer, if it fails it always offers you another log in option

Out of 4 of my pc's with W11 now, only one actually got the update by default. I got fed up waiting. Two of them got the update by downloading an ISO from Microsoft and making a DVD. The last one I did was on a double layer disk, but a single layer would have worked because W11 is only just over 4Gb. This beta pc was upgraded to W11 by going onto the dev channel which offered it immediately, and then going back to the beta. That was before the beta channel qualified for W11, it now does.
As for pins, I only have a 4 letter plus a number for every pc and do not find it too difficult. This is an advantage in having a Microsoft account, these things can be sorted out if required.

That's exactly what I intend to do. I have the commercial (paid) version of Reflect v8 and I'll do a stand-alone backup before trying this.

Just a note of caution for paid Reflect installations:
Reflect choked a bit when I upgraded from Win10 to Win11 on my test PC. It reverted to a free license and didn't immediately let me "upgrade" back to my paid license. It finally worked after a restart but I'm not sure if it was the restart or something else that fixed it.
There was at least one other report of this happening on the Reflect forum. Someone on the Reflect forum suggested that when I upgrade my other computers I should unregister my license before the upgrade and reregister once I'm on Win11. I should know in a few hours if that suggestion was good.

I do hope I don't find myself hating Windows 11. Reading the the various posts it seems to lie somewhere between "It's great!" and "It sucks!"...just like American politics. :)

After a whole 2 days of playing around with Win11 I say "It's great!" and "It sucks!" ... just like Win10 ... only different.
