Win11 24H2 Installed, now no network sharing

I've read all though this thread, and I sorted out a bunch of issues with networking with the various suggestions. I think I've adjusted everything I found in the thread, so I should be close. I have one remaining issue, my Windows 10 Home machine doesn't show up in my Windows 11 Pro Network.

I can access it using \\<computer name> and then have full file sharing. I can also ping the computer name from the Win11 machine. My remaining task is to get it to show up in Network and I'm done. It seems the only issue is name resolution, but clearly the machine can find the Win10 machine by name. Why isn't it populating the name in Network?

I tried turning off the firewall, but I don't think that's the issue anyway, with the firewall on, I have connectivity to the missing machine.

I have given up on depending upon any computer showing up in Network. They just don't reliably show up.

Instead I have a folder called "My Network" on my desktop with shortcuts for all the networked computers. The shortcuts always work if the computers are turned on and awake.

That's what I'm doing now, but I'd like it to work correctly, what a concept1 :D I guess that will have to do until I figure out how to fix this. I did find one issue, I did an IPCONFIG /RELEASE then an IPCONFIG /RENEW and that confused the name resolution as the IP address of the computer changed. I'm configuring static IP addresses for the computers to avoid that happening, but it still bugs me that the name resolution doen't work properly.

I would agree with the caveat that the PC you're networking with is running Microsoft Windows on the network you're attempting to connect with. I have some Linux machines Windows doesn't see and TBH I kinda like it that way. Microsoft doesn't need to know everything I do on my network.

I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

That's a good point, I see that indeed it doesn't. That wasn't bothering me nearly as much as the computer I'm trying to connect to not showing up!

Did anybody find solution how to make SMB connected devices, which are not Windows based, visible in File Explorer as it was in Windows 11 Pro 23H2?

So far, I cannot see icons of my connected devices, I can only see my Laptop which use Windows 11. Everything else, like Linux based devices are not visible in File Explorer. Yes, I can reach them by typing their IPs or Map Network Drive, but this not solution since I do not want to Map them all. How to make other devices, which are not based on Windows, to be visible in File Explorer. I use fixed IPs all the time for all deivces, that is not problem and I implemented all suggestions from this thread, already.

I think that's what a lot of this thread is all about! It appears it's yet another thing that Microsoft broke when they did the update! :(

Yep I tried them all too and no joy...Microsoft needs to fix it or give us an option to turn it back on in network settings!

I have all my PCs on pause for updates except one to test updates on.

WOW. Think I'll just keep this rig on 23H2. I already have a couple running 24H2 but have not checked to see if they are visibly on the network. I certainly do network with my main so this is good to know.

My 24H2 can see Win11 machines, but not Win10 machines. The cynic in me thinks maybe that Microsoft's way of telling us that they want to kill off Win10! :rolleyes: I did manage to tweak the network settings so I could find my NAS box, so that's something.

They call that as Update. What to say, ridiculous. I think this one is not network related only, since we can approach share device folders by typing IPs, bu it is a problem of new, cosmetically upgraded File Manager, which lost ability to show icons of network share devices connected in local network. It is definitely bad programing issue.

Just to add, I heard some people with 23H2, the newest update start to have this issue also. Only Windows devices see each other and none of them can see Android (Tv Box and others), Linux and Other devices.

The problem has been reported in many forums for years now. There have been many suggestions but I have yet to find any one so call fix solve the problem permanently. I have settled on using the network shortcuts and moved on with my life.

BTW, if anyone does find a real solution for this problem then they will become famous. :party:

Took me two years to find a solution to my TBMT3.0 issue so it might not be impossible. There may even be some networking software that will suffice. (Third party, of course. Don't hold your breath with Windows.)

Just a thought.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
So i did all the fixes on my win 11 24h2 and win 10 pc is now visible and network shares are back.
But my win 11 24h2 is now not visible in its own file Explorer network tab. Also 2nd win 11 24h2 pc on network is not visible until I put \\computer name in network bar. Pc then shows in network tab till with share accessible till I close the window. This happened after I did the fixes. Ugh. 35 years in IT and this is nuts!
Any help would be appreciated

I had 24h2 updated on a previous install and all my shares worked. Both my media PC, Windows 10, and my WD Cloud network drives.

However, a new board and memory and so a fresh install, this time 24h2 from the start.

All seemed ok with the media Windows 10 machine access. Shared and drives mapped.

Not a chance with both of my WD My Cloud plugged in drives.
I spent ages trying to resolve this, not knowing of Windows changes as it had ran fine as an update.
Eventually I found this....

Changes to SMB security in Windows 11 24H2 release preview may prevent access to third party NAS appliances or other devices.

And editing the gpedit to make the noted changes, due to the WD drives not being signed I guess, then it worked.

It is one thing MS doing such changes, but the help and notifications are much less helpful in trying to resolve the issue.

This worked for me after installing 24H2 on all our non-compliant PCs.

Go to Start, type Powershell, Right click on Windows Powershell, and Run as Administrator. (That last bit is very important!)

Copy and paste these commands one at a time, and Enter.

Set-SmbClientConfiguration -EnableInsecureGuestLogons $true -Force

Set-SmbClientConfiguration -RequireSecuritySignature $false -Force

Set-SmbServerConfiguration -RequireSecuritySignature $false -Force
