OS
Win11 Pro, 24H2 26100.2152
if i open a random folder & position icons aligned to grid per personal position
from left to right for example, leave that folder & reopen it,
magic win11 repositioned them all alphabetically, Whiiile .. . there's nothing selected
in "Sort by" if i right click that space.. Not Even by Name.

if it is truly changing the sort order when "None" is selected, resetting folder view options is probably your best bet. if that does not resolve it, the issue will be much deeper

holy crap dacrone, i used it this morning, its probably what forced my windows to reorder by name non stop..
i used the global section & used Medium icons to set the whole computer folders to medium, cause that was
always an issue in some folders out of the blue. & now i see this:
Sort by: +name << this is probably what forced windows to do it.

When i click on global / columns, i get this:

Do you know how to keep all icons on medium while geting rid of this name auto reordering ?

Windows Vista was the last Windows version that directly supported arbitrarily arranging icons within a folder (as opposed to the desktop). The feature can also be enabled right up to Windows 11 (see Windows XP/Vista view mode in WinSetView), but the arrangement is only remembered if you are using Windows 7, Windows 8.x, or a Windows 10 build that is lower than 1703.

This is not a WinSetView issue. It's a limitation of Windows Explorer. You're not the only one that wants to see a return of this feature:

Please bring back the ability to freely arrange

here. you can still do it. has some coloring side effects (dark text on dark background), but you'll have to figure those out.. or maybe @LesFerch knows the quick remedy:

Open Regedit

Go to:
Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
Export "Bags" subkey, then Delete it

Revert it:

Import both Bags .reg files you exported

Restart Explorer

Save this as .reg and run it:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"FullRowSelect"=-

Restart Explorer again

here. you can still do it.

That's built into WinSetView. Just check the box "Windows XP/Vista view mode". That will enable the old XP/Vista view mode which supports free arranging of items within folders in Details and Icon views.

BUT, as mentioned, those arrangements will not be remembered. You have to be running Windows 10 prior to build 1703 (or Windows 7 or 8) for the manual arrangements to be remembered.
