Windows 11
My PC is an HP Omen 30L, which came with Win10 Home. I upgraded to Pro last year via the Microsoft Store. Last week, I updated to 11 Pro via Windows Update. Out of the blue today, 11 is deactivated and has the Activate Windows nag watermark in the lower right corner of my desktop. When I enter the activation key that I received upon upgrading to 10 Pro, it rejects it with error code 0x80070005.

I have the product key and the email MS sent me after I upgraded my original 10 installation from Home to Pro last year as proof of purchase.

What do I need to do from here?

See if this helps;
  1. Launch the Windows Run by hitting the Windows key + R, type in "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData" in it, and click OK. Enter the drive where your Windows is installed in place of C: and username in place of USERNAME.
  2. Right-click on App Data and open the Properties.
  3. In the next window, go to the security tab and click on Edit.
  4. Click on Add.
  5. Now, type Everyone, click on Check Names, and finally, hit OK.
  6. Click on Everyone and allow Full control under Permissions for everyone. Click on OK.
That's it. Now reboot your system for the changes to take effect. Hopefully you will not see the Windows update error 0x80070005 again.
And now anyone who logs onto the computer can go into your AppData folder and do what they like.

Try (re)installing Windows 11 Home edition, then doing the edition switch again, from there, using your Pro Upgrade key.

Or if it doesn't work then reinstall to Windows 10 Hoem, do the edition switch, then upgrade to Windows 11 using the media creation tool (in-place upgrade, not booted)

Something is really wrong on your end, because you should NOT have to re-enter the key in the first place. Your PC should have a digital entitlement because you previously succesfully activated a Windows 10 license on it, and Windows 11 would pick this up by default.

Are you sure you’re running Pro? Some upgrades have been known to upgrade to Enterprise rather than Pro.
If Pro is installed then try activating with the default/generic Windows 11 key - VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

As @FreeBooter said, first run the activation troubleshooter. If that doesn't work

I seriously doubt they will even know which registry keys are throwing that error... they will most likely just give a new key.

With all the privileges they have, I would think they will get the latest key you typed in, "restore it to default" and type the key back in.

Nope it's not that simple... WAT is complicated with multiple components. Software licencing service to registry to tokens database (which holds the keys and hardware ID).

I'm just flabbergasted... Enterprise is akin to Pro virtually (so I understand the confusion) but the reason we have specific product keys is to identify each - it's not difficult to assign a generic key during the Store activation process of assigning a digital licence
