Whispers and murmurs about Windows 11 22H2 (codenamed Sun Valley 2) reaching release to manufacturing (RTM) status soon have been doing the rounds for a while now, with a report suggesting that it is happening this month itself. Another more recent report claimed that the latest Beta Channel build 22621 was the RTM candidate, with the sign-off on May 20, which is just under a week away.

Today, famed leakster and Twitter user WalkingCat has revealed the Windows 11 22H2 RTM date and it is just a few days after the May 20 signing-off. According to WalkingCat, Microsoft will be signing 22H2 or Sun Valley 2 (SV2) on May 24. However, it wasn't revealed which Windows 11 build was the RTM candidate and so for now, the most likely candidate seems to be build 22621 as suggested by yesterday's report.

In the past we have had Beta's XXXXX.1 but at last minute, cumulative updates were added, and the installed version would be XXXXX.YYY if you used Windows Update, but if you clean installed from iso, it would install what ever version the iso was, and then immediately updated via cumulative updates to XXXXX.YYY.

Sometimes MS update the iso to a later build (usually for the LTSC).

My point is do not confuse the signed off iso sub build with the actual official release sub-build.

I have a separate drive on the PC that IS running the Insider Beta version. If I install this to a different drive and on THAT drive,. exit the Insider program, will that force the other out, as well?

No. But why would you have to exit the insider program on the drive you do a clean install to? You would have to join the inside program on that drive first in order to leave it.

It seems that 22621 has been declared the baseline build for certifying driver compatibility for 22H2. That 5th September date appears to be a target date MS have set their OEM partners for completing their compatibility submissions.

3 months in Release Preview doesn't seem an unduly long time to wait, not if it irons out any undiscovered bugs.

If we're in the 'pick the GA date' sweepstakes, then I'm choosing 15th September 2022. MS have been setting that as the expiry date of every 22H2 Dev build so far (“It’s a blatant clue innit!") ;)

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

I had already installed the Beta build as a vhdx native boot on one of my laptops, dual booting alongside its Windows 10 install. That was several builds ago and Windows Update has by now updated it to 22621 - works very well....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Okay so I tried installing 22621 and my desktop rejected it but my laptop took it without issue. In the about windows window it shows like a normal release so this is probably the real deal.
