Windows 11 23h2 not updating, stopped 8 days ago

External usb drives can start getting expensive. I decided to get idrive which is $99 a year (I think the first year it's $69). And backed all files up to that. Then you can just download them again. It's been reliable. Although I don't rely on it as sole backup and do have backups on external usb drive as well - it just means I don't need to buy external drives nearly as often.

Win 11 23H2 End of Life is November 11, 2025

Maybe MS jumped the gun a bit.
I cant cite you a date, but Windows update stopped showing it in WU.
Also. The user's PC is unsupported because of the 3rd gen processor.
Would still have to use workarounds.

Porthos, it was working without issues up to 8 days ago. Win 11 23H2 does not end until November this year. I am sure that if Microsoft had pulled the plug early, it would have been all over the internet.

@Trebo58 An in-place upgrade to 25H2 from your 23H2 using unsupported hardware using jensd_be method would solve this.

I've used this method over a dozen times. on unsupported hardware. ZERO PROBLEMS, and they are all running perfectly.
No joke.

PCUser, yes, as I said, you and me both, but why now? I have just remembered that Last weekend, I did a Windows reinstallation as the system crashed. Despite my attempts to recover it, the issue persisted, so I had to reinstall. I lost all my apps, etc, as I had no recovery. Maybe this is what has caused the problem. But I don't know how to recover. I apologise, I should have mentioned this earlier.

If you've had to do a reinstallation, maybe just do another reinstallation of 25H2 - and avoid the whole upgrade business. Just download the iso and burn it in rufus. As I assume you did before :-)

Sorry I didn't read back. I don;t know then. If you can find a way to back your files up, I'd just clean install 25H2. Meanwhile you could just turn windows updates off. It'll probably be ok. But it sounds a lot of hassle trying to get your current install updated for an upgrade.

Could this be related... Advanced Systecare notified me that the following software was outdated. When I tried to update, only CPUID CPU-Z updated; all the others failed with the following error message. Now, as you can see, all the others are Windows Apps, so it looks like Windows is not only blocking updates, but Windows apps as well, so can these two issues be related

Ok, update and new issues.
Bit the bullet and upgraded to Win 25H2, went like a dream, lost all my quick launch icons, resolved that by installing ExplorerPatcher. However, I have no start menu. I have to right-click to open up just a listing of tasks.
Update worked until Windows tried to download Office XP Service Pack 3, which gave me a download error - 0x80096004, then the update failed, and Windows update stopped.

I don;yt have Office XP and according to Microsoft, this update/download is no longer available.
I have tried uninstalling ExplorerPatcher, rebooting, but still no start menu. I have tried Windows 10 and 11 start menus.

So, please, I have two questions
1) How do I get my smart menuback
2) How do I get rid of the Office XP Service Pack 3 download so that I can run downloads

Give yourself a fresh start with 25H2...

You won't lose and files or programs... it'll just fix Windows.

Windows tried to download Office XP Service Pack 3

2) How do I get rid of the Office XP Service Pack 3 download

Others have been reporting the same sort of thing - the previous threads I saw were about MSOffice 2007 SP3.
I don't think anybody has solved the problem.

I suggest you check for anything about Office XP / 2007 appearing in the lists in either
Control panel, Progs & features
Control panel, Progs & features, View installed updates

according to Microsoft, this update/download is no longer available
Office XP & Office 2007 are no longer supported but their past updates remain available for download in the MSUpdateCatalog.

All the best,
Denis

I suggest you check your ExplorerPatcher settings in these tabs:
- Taskbar, Taskbar styles
- Start menu

1) How do I get my smart menuback
If there is no obvious explanation in either of those places, I suggest you uninstall ExplorerPatcher before running the Repair install suggested by Ghot above.
He's suggested it in the hope that it will fix your current problems [despite your having updated to 25H2 so very recently].

You should then be able to reinstall ExplorerPatcher [latest version].

I have two Windows 11 25H2 computers, I have MSOffice 2007 & ExplorerPatcher on both without any problems being apparent.

Best of luck,

Hi Ghot, is this not what I have just done, i.e upgraded from 23H2 to 25H2?
I think he's suggesting an in place upgrade as a repair :-) So you still keep all your files and programs but it's like a clean install. After that maybe don't download or install Explorer Patcher. Let Windows do all the updates. Hopefully it won't install Office XP again without explorer patcher.
