Solved Windows 11 Chime

Hi all,

I have a 10 month old HP Envy 13 x360 laptop running Windows 11 Home. I have a Logitech G Pro dongle plugged in and with the headset off. Last night, for the first time, the laptop chimed 5 times through the laptop speaker whilst it was locked with the lid partially down. It stopped by the time I got to it and noticed the screen was on. Unlocked and checked all event logs and found nothing relating to the chime. Why would it come through the computer speakers when the dongle was plugged in?

Anyone else experienced this?

Hello and welcome to ElevenForum. :-)


Sometimes a loose or dirty USB connector will do that... multiple chimes.

I would try unplugging the dongle, and cleaning it with Isopropyl alcohol.
If you're in the US... you can get 90%+ Isopropyl alcohol at any drug store.
16 oz. is like $2 or $3

Only use 90%+ Isopropyl alcohol.
Anything lower than 90%+... has too much water in it.



I have an old joystick with a USB connector... it used to do the same thing, till I cleaned it.



Also... turn off the laptop and remove the battery... and clean the laptop's USB connector also.
Inside and out. After cleaning wait about 5-10 minutes for it to dry out.
Isopropyl, dries very fast.

Are you sure it didn’t reboot? Sounds like error beep codes to me…

Definitely did not reboot. Unlocked and all windows etc were still open including unsaved documents etc.

Don't think it is a dirty USB connector. The dongle is Logitech Pro G dongle is permanently plugged in. Unfortunately, cannot easily remove the batter of the HP envy series laptops. However, in saying all this. The laptop has been sitting in its stand since day one as I use it as a work-from-home setup with all things plugged in permanently.

check update history. if it updated usb set drivers it would've disconnected and reconnected devices automatically which would make the usb connect/disconnect sound multiple times during that process

It can still be a dirty connector.
You won't be able to SEE the dirt.

Like I said... I had a USB joystick that did the same thing... occasionally.
Cleaning it... solved the problem.

Humidity, microscopic dust, cigarette smoke... etc., can cause the problem.

Mystery solved. Had a look at the event log again and found a succession of USB-USBHUB3 events: 2x Surprise Removal and 2x USB Device Enumeration.

It looks like the system thinks my Logitech Pro X USB dongle is draining the system power even though the system is plugged into power permanently and tried to disconnect it.

BTW, the laptop is only a couple of months old, not 10 (was thinking of my other one) and it was the Logitech Pro X not G PRo.

Laptop makes chiming sound when screen is in sleep mode and receiver is on.

My laptop recently began chiming when the screen goes to sleep and the receiver is on. The receiver is connected via HDMI. I don't know why. Please help me figure this out. I want to solve the problem not just disable the audio. Please help.
