Windows 11 Pro Version 24H2 Build 26100.3775
My external D:\ drive is not showing up. Not showing up in My Computer. Not showing up in Disk Management. When I use diskpart on the cmd line it does not show there either. This is an annoying bug in Windows 11.

When I look in Device Manager there is a yellow exclamation mark next to:

Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Device Failed).

Disable and re-enable did not solve the issue either.

I’ll say it again, it’s not an annoying bug or a bug at all that I am aware of. You say it’s all over the internet but anything I find generally results in being about user or drive errors.

In my opinion, It’s either a faulty cable or a faulty drive.

What make/model is the drive again?

What is your exact laptop model? It might lack USB controller driver. I had this error before, on laptops actually.

Also, I’m not sure if you can still disable Fast Startup in the Power Options, but it’s something I read on the net so it won’t hurt to give it a try?

Disable Fast Startup in Windows 11 through the Power Options settings. You'll need to navigate to the Control Panel, Power Options, and then "Choose what the power buttons do". Click "Change settings that are currently unavailable" and uncheck the "Turn on fast startup" box.

Drive is a Samsung 860 Evo. It worked fine in Windows 10. Disabling fast startup had no effect on fixing the issue.

You can try Samsung tool, but I do not think that it will make any difference, if laptop fails to detect it.

A small detail - I believe that Fast Startup will not be visible if Hibernate is disabled? That's what happened on my devices after I disabled Hibernate in a command window powercfg.exe /hibernate off due to having SSDs.

If an external disk is not showing in a computer, the first thing I will do is to plug it into another working PC and check whether it shows up in that PC.

    Upgraded from Windows 10 Home to Windows 11 Home on 28 Oct 2023
This drive has shown up before for days in My Computer. It's just that after some time has gone by, Windows kicks it out. I can't use the ASUS tool because it says it's not compatible with my motherboard.

I could try my other external drive.

I will be reloading Windows soon and I will need access to my external drive.

I've been using USB drives since... forever. That's over 20+ years on many versions of Windows, I believe Windows 98 was the first that had relatively seamless USB support, and USB FLASH drives were pretty expensive! I've never run across an issue like this that wasn't because of some identifiable drive or configuration issue of Windows.

That's certainly my reading on your situation. I really doubt this is a Windows problem, most likely a hardware issue. For laptops, I've seen several instances of flaky USB sockets. After the laptop has been around the block a few times, constant connection/disconnection actually wears out the connector, and it can also cause a broken solder joint on the internal board to the USB socket.

A HDD may fail anytime - a catastrophic failure , sudden death . The only way you can ascertain whether the external disk has failed or not is to plug it into another working PC and check. If you do not have access to another PC, take it to a friendly neighbhorhood Computer shop and request them to check.
