Hi Hsehestedt, when you agree to the insider program you agreed to the terms, also they did say you have to roll back on the 5th. Also, if Microsoft provides updates, drivers or whatnot to users and it breaks their computers, it's bad for Microsoft and they can get sued. Also, according to the warranty act on any computer, issues, damages to a computer that result of the incompatible OS is not covered by warranty. So you won't' get a warranty or support from the manufacturer.

Some news sites tech showed pictures of the waiver you have to fill out if you wan to use Windows 11 and it says it will oid your warranty and you wont' get updates

Sued? On what grounds and for what? Users were told not to use 11 unless their devices meet the new specs.

What I am saying is that Microsoft can get sued for providing false info to users that they can upgrade not, and still give updates that may break their computer. Yes I know that, this is why Microsoft is really wanting to make sure to send the message to not upgrade if not compatible. Anyways, I have contact Surface and they are investigating Windows 11 on pro-5. Will update in 24 hours. Sorry for the harsh language just not in a good mood.

This is why Microsoft isn't going to give updates, since updates may break your computer and it's bad reputation for Microsfot. Not trying to be rude but this is the info I know of
The bottom line is you or anyone shouldn't use 11 on non compliant hardware. If you/anyone does all the issues that it might cause is on them and not MS.

Yes, that's right :D but surface team escalated my case to be evaluated by the engineers about my surface. What I am saying that these security requirements are really making a lot of people not happy.

So? They all have access to Windows 10 for four more years and in that time they can save up for hardware that meets the new specs.

Yes true :) though Microsoft didnt' do well with the explanation and stuff. Yes I can wait a few years but the way they handled explanations wasn't good. I think I am going in the wrong direction. I shouldclose this therad.

Yes and that has to do with setting as in the below screenshot

Sir, I am able to turn that on, it says no incompatible problems and I need to restart computer....
So can I - and that's with a 6th gen i7-6600U.

The 'supported or not' question seems to boil down to driver support from the silicon mnufacturers. MS has chosen to only support processors for Win11 where the manufacturer supports the 'new Windows Driver model' for that processor. Basically that rules our anything earlier than 8th gen, except for a couple of specific 7th gen that MS later added to the supported list as they do have such drivers.

Microsoft said:
Reliability. Devices upgraded to Windows 11 will be in a supported and reliable state. By choosing CPUs that have adopted the new Windows Driver model and are supported by our OEM and silicon partners who are achieving a 99.8% crash free experience.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

I see I see, that makes sense, but this new driver model should only really affect OEM"s. Also Microsoft changed their minds on purpose of the last time "Soft and Hard levels". All I can see from your link is that I need VBS, TPM, Secure boot, Windows hello. Which all have, I just saying that the way Microsoft is telling everyone this is not acceptable.

Also, I am in contact with the Surface team to get this issue escalated to the engineering team to fully test this, hope to hear back from them a "YES" tomorrow.

Why can't Intel just release new drivers, I did see Intel release some beta drivers that mention windows 11

Looks like I opened a can of worms here. If Microsoft drew a line in the sand and said, "Windows won't work on that machine" I would have zero problems with that at all. My point is that the messaging is confusing. They will tell you that there is some set of hardware, currently undefined, that they will allow installation on for "enthusiasts" (their choice of terms), but it won't be officially supported.

If they would allow you to run on such hardware, although on your own if it doesn't work, why would they then withhold security updates which are in everyone's best interest?

I'm simply saying that the messaging is confusing. The fact that we are even debating this topic shows how poor the messaging around this is only 3 days from official launch.

I have no problem going back to 10 if that is what is required. Heck, I just plunked down good money on a system with latest gen CPU, 128GB RAM, 4 SSDs, etc. so I'm not adverse to buying new hardware.

My point is simply that we are less than 72 hours from launch and still don't have clarity on what will happen. Just define a clear set of policies so that we can all move on. Is that asking too much?

Apologies if my views clash with anyone else's opinions. You just need to understand my perspective a little bit. I worked for Microsoft. For over ten years. In Enterprise Technical Support. In the "good days". I am still to this day a die-hard Microsoft loyalist, but I get frustrated with the current state of things sometimes, so I'm sorry if I've let that color my comments. My enthusiasm and high hopes sometimes get away from me.

Feel free to open fire :)

Totally agree with you, it's sad as a Microsoft fan who loves to get people to use the greatest news apps and OS's of Windows. but with these bugs and weird messaging. It makes me sad, they are pushing Edge, Windows 11 too fast, that's my point, their messaging is horrible at this time around. I get why people missed Xp and Windwos 7 now

Surface Team got back to me via chat that due to demand, the engineers are testing to see if they can get older surfaces that are discontinued yet to be elibile. I just crossing my fingers for now :) You guys better check with your manufacturer support. Note this is just sepcualtion.

Where did you see that. They have allowed some "enthusiast" High End DeskTop (HEDT) machines that are labeleed as if they are 7th gen, but they are really in a class by themselves - nothing like 7th gen mainstream, they only came out about the same time and got the label. T But these have been added to their officially supported list. Pretty clear-cut I think, though many might not like it.

Agreed with you, those Enthusiast's are those beta testers

"Behind the scenes, Microsoft will allow enthusiasts who wish to upgrade non-compliant older PCs to Windows 11 to do so. These upgrades will not be officially supported, but those who wish to manually upgrade a PC to Windows 11, either by keeping it in the Windows Insider Program or by manually creating Windows 11 install media with the Media Creation Tool, will be allowed to do so. (This might be seen as similar to the quiet but ongoing ability to use a Windows 7 or newer product key to clean install and activate Windows 10.)"
.
.
.
" It will publicly keep digging in and take a stand for security, inarguably a good thing, broadly speaking. But it will also allow enthusiasts who are technical enough and understand the risks to upgrade older hardware to Windows 11 too, though those PCs will not be officially supported."

Well I would take all of that with a grain of salt.

As for claims MS wouldn't not be supplying updates in that case, they are probbly mistakenly equating "support" with "updates". I believe support in this case means if something doesn't work and you call them for help, you are on your own.

As for claims MS wouldn't not be supplying updates in that case, they are probbly mistakenly equating "support" with "updates". I believe support in this case means if something doesn't work and you call them for help, you are on your own.
I tend to agree with this. The only MS statement I've seen that might impact on receipt of updates is:

"Certain features require specific hardware. System requirements to run some apps will exceed the Windows 11 minimum device specifications. Check device compatibility information specific to the apps you want to install. Available storage on your device will vary based on installed apps and updates. Performance will scale with higher end, more capable PCs. Additional requirements may apply over time and for updates."

The last sentence implies that there may be future issues, possibly even if the the current minimum spec. is met. However, I would interpret the whole statement to mean that some future updates and additional features will be designed on the presumption that the receiving hardware meets the minimum spec; and so may not fully work on other non-compliant hardware. That of course means MS will have no responsibility to 'fix' problems that only affect systems with non-compliant hardware; but that, in turn, opens up the market to third party developers to create solutions, e.g. if some built-in security feature doesn't work because it requires 'communication' with a specific generation of CPU, or TPM 2.0, that doesn't prevent a third party from filling any gap with an alternative solution. In reality, with the continuing support for the very similar Windows 10 platform for at least 4 years, serious 'incompatibilities' may not become significant for some time and a lot may depend on how rapid the take-up of Windows 11 is, especially amongst the business and public sector communities.

Microsoft is under pressure from governments, big business, and themselves to make the OS more secure and resistant to hacking. To this end, some future security enhancements will make use of features that are defined in the minimum device specifications. The when is unknown.

These enhancements will not work on machines that do not meet the minimum specifications, and would cause crashes if applied/updated. What Microsoft should/would do is to not provide those machines with these updates. So Win 11 runs fine on non-supported hardware up to the point of these updates, and then becomes unsupported. Maybe running Win 11 at this point would be no worse off, from a security perspective, than running Win 10. It is possible that Win 10 machines will continue getting updates that it can run, while those unsupported Win 11 machines get no further updates.

This is really only an exposure for those individuals who chose to install Win 11 on unsupported machines. Big business would not be in that situation.

Sir, I am able to turn that on, it says no incompatible problems and I need to restart computer. I think I just have a older version of this VBS. Thanks for the insights. Also I see on bing.com/news that this VBS is causing game issues
Hi,
Yeah a 25% hit in performance is a lot.
