Solved Windows 11 File Explorer -- the double-arrow that used to appear between the address box and the search box has disappeared

On my laptop, I often need to have two windows side-by-side.

File Explorer is on the right -- maybe 3" wide.

The search box is not visible -- the space is all taken by the address box.

The double-arrow that used to appear between the address box and the search box has disappeared.

This is a PROBLEM for me! Need to be able to narrow the address box so I can see the search box.

I am on Windows 11 --- 24H2

I posted this problem in one of the Microsoft Tech Community sites.
They responded that there is no way to resize textboxes now.
The "solution" they provided was to go to settings, view, and in "When typing into list view" select "Automatically type into the Search Box".
With that change, when I start typing, the text will go directly into search box.
That's better than nothing, but I can't SEE what's in the search box.

I submitted this issue on the Windows 11 Feedback site, but my comments are generally ignored.
Is there a way to submit an escalated request?

it was Moment 4 update a long while ago that did this. you can use windhawk and restore the pre-moment 4 address bar/search field. windhawk can be ran in portable mode as well.

Not the solution you asked for, but your problem might be solved by using the little (freeware) app 'Everything'.
In default settings it will give you a context menu entry "Search with Everything".
The app is searching much faster then Windows does!

its straight forward. just download the portable zip and extract it to somewhere and run the .exe inside. if you want it running at startup, create a shortcut to the .exe and right click > properties > shortcut and in the target field, add " -tray-only" and then put that shortcut in Shell:startup folder

*note the space before -tray:

\windhawk.exe" -tray-only

So does it automatically implement *all* of the various modifications, or do I need to select the mod I want to correct the specific problem I'm experiencing?

scroll through the thread i created. has all instructions and scroll down and it has mods by name.

I think the one I want is Classic Explorer navigation bar.
There is a button to click "Get Windhawk to install this mod".
When I d/l it, it loads as ..... Unconfirmed 563703.crdownload ........ not an executable file.
What am I doing wrong?

I deleted the program i initially downloaded and started over, initiating the d/l/ from that "Get Windhawk to install this mod" link.
Seems to be working ........... will report back....

I don't have the arrow to adjust the size of the address and search boxes.
But the search box remains large enough that it is useable.

Plus there are other advantages, like it won’t randomly open the auto populate list under the navigation/address bar.
