As a reminder, these release notes apply to those who are in the Canary 29600 Series Channel. As we begin the transition to the updated Windows Insider Program, all new build release notes will be labeled under the new channel names, even though Insiders in the Canary 29600 Series Channel may not yet find themselves having transitioned to Experimental (Future Platforms). Changes and improvements gradually being rolled out​

Audio​

  • Following up on our previous improvements, we’re making some more adjustments to Settings > System > Sounds based on your feedback. Namely, we’ve updated the “All sound devices” page so:
    • You now have the ability to change default devices from this page.
    • Each of the devices displayed on this page now has a little volume meter next to it to show if there is audio actively playing.
    • We’ve adjusted the page design slightly so now you can filter whether you’re viewing input or output devices.
    • We’ve added toggles so you can choose if you want to hide or show disabled, disconnected, and unplugged devices on this page.
  • We’ve also updated the input and output audio properties page for devices in Settings to now include jack information for those that need it.

Reminder for Windows Insiders in the Canary 29600 Series Channel (soon transitioning to Experimental (Future Platforms))​

  • These builds can be unstable and may be released with limited documentation.
  • The builds released to these channels represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows. Features and experiences included in these builds might never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features might change over time, be removed, or replaced, and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they are ready.
  • Many features are rolled out using Controlled Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • The desktop watermark shown at the lower right corner of the desktop is normal for Windows Insider pre-release builds.
  • For Windows Insiders who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you, you can turn on the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available via Settings > Windows Update. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your PC over time once they are ready.

As a final test I installed 29610.000 as a 100% clean install using Microsoft's own ISO. The issue of not receiving further builds started a couple of builds before that one and yes, there was an issue related to using Fast Start when those builds appeared in that it can freeze and fail to shutdown requiring a forced shutdown.

Turn off Fast Start and it all performs really well. The initial install receives around 50 various updates (drivers and all the usual miscellaneous stuff) on the first round and a further handful when checking a while later but none of the last few builds have gone on and offered the next Windows update when it is available.

Anyone ever been in that situation with Insider builds?

Usually you have to enroll in order to get any build updates. If you're not signed into a Microsoft Account then there are alternatives like OfflineInsiderEnroll.

The history to this is that I started the 29500 Future Platform branch as soon as it was announced several months back. That was not a clean instal but was just a case of switching channels as per Microsoft instructions as I recall. I'd been on Dev up to that point.

All was good week after week with each new feature build being offered and then suddenly the builds stopped. This seemed to coincide with the sudden issue of not being able to shut down with Fast Start enabled. I tried a clean install from an ISO from UUPDUMP of the next build that I was not receiving and that too would not update. As a third attempt I've just done a clean install from Microsoft provided ISO so all regions and so on our correct (unlike UUPDUMP which only offered the US version) and this install is also the same. No feature update to this latest build.

I got a popup questionnaire from MS today on how easy I thought installation was, were there too many steps, did anything cause concern etc etc.

I mentioned that the biggest annoyance for me is that initial updates such as video driver and network drivers seem to load and initialise during critical steps of setup. Screen flashing and resizing many times just as you are entering account details. Even worse getting a 'you have lost internet connection' at the same critical moments of entering passwords and ID's. There should be a pause where it says to 'hold on while we initialise some settings' to stop users losing track of entering details.

And of course I mentioned that I'm seeing no new feature builds once any of the last few builds have been installed.

Problem with this build -- Cannot add ANY optional features !!! so FAIL on this point -- might not be significant to a lot but I like OPENSSH server and a lot of the extra fonts.

There seems to be a problem with your network connection to the appropriate download server, not the build as such. I can add optional features, and I can see in Task Manager that this required some download activity.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

My internet connection is still well over 1 Gpbs !!! nothing wrong with that -- still getting "Couldn't add optional features". Perhaps these can't be added on this build when in a VM !!! even when almost ALL security including firewalls turned off !!.

This build -- same network etc has ZERO problems -- just adding this feature to test again -- 100% OK !!

All the speed in the world is no help if DNS lookup can't find the MS download server that supplies those optional features, or if it's being blocked by a firewall.

Compare the network settings of that working build with the 29613.1000 build that doesn't work - there must be a reason why it can't contact the MS server, and that's not the build itself, my 29613.1000 has no problems.

I've got BOTH of these VM's now running on the same TWO HOSTs - one works perfectly (28.xxx) the 29.xxx fails !!!.
No idea why but something is obviously wrong with my 29.xxx build. Not though spending any more time with it - I'll just wait for the next 26H2 build to appear.

"The magic of Windows" !!!!! well if it were 100% predictable - what would be the fun in messing around with it.!!
