Insider Windows 11 Insider Experimental (Future Platforms) build 29683.1000 - Oct. 7

 Microsoft Support:

Changes and improvements gradually being rolled out*

  • This update includes a small set of general improvements and fixes that improve the overall experience for Insiders running this build on their PCs.

[General]

  • Symbols were missing for our previous flight. They should be available for this one.

Known issues

  • We're investigating reports that some Insiders aren't able to use the internet after the previous flight.
  • We're also aware of and investigating reports of VMware devices green screening.

Reminder for Windows Insiders in the Experimental (Future Platforms) channel

  • These builds can be unstable and might be released with limited documentation.
  • The builds released to these channels represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and shouldn't be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows. Features and experiences included in these builds might never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features might change over time, be removed, or replaced, and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they're ready.
  • Many features are rolled out using Controlled Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time. We monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • The desktop watermark shown at the lower right corner of the desktop is normal for Windows Insider pre-release builds.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders might not be fully localized, and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.

I downloaded the official Microsoft ISO 29683.1000 and made a new ISO by spiltting the install.win into install.swm and install2.swm so that they can fit on a FAT32 USB drive to make a bootable installation media.
1791502277444.webp

1791502367969.webp

Then added CA2023 to the ISO using this Microsoft PowerShell script "Make2023BootableMedia" which does not require the whole ADK tool package, it just downloads "oscdimg.exe" that is needed for this script.
As you can see below, in this case it was already downloaded on a previous run, so it just reused it

Make2023BootableMedia.ps1 is just a fancier version of what my boot media script does. Copy the CA 2023-signed \EFI\Boot and \EFI\Microsoft\Boot folders to your designated drive. This time, MS pulls the oscdimg.exe binary from the Windows symbol servers to avoid having to download and install the entire ADK just to use oscdimg.exe.

Works fine and updates the ISO directly. 😉👍

@garlin,
I just saw a new different behavior between the official Microsoft 29683.1000 and the one created from uup-dump with the same build.
While on previous Builds like 29671 and 29680 they were behaving the same way

I used the official Microsoft 29683.1000 with your boot.wim fix to allow "Repair my PC" to work and tried a Windows Image Restore. Then tried the same with the one made from uup-dump.
With the official Microsoft one the Format and repartition option is grayed out and cannot be selected. This seems to be common also to build 26340.9596.
With the one created from uup-dump the option to Format and repartition is still available, but when selected it gets Error 0x80042308 like it did on 2 previous builds.
In either case this is a major problem because the restore only works if the disk are exactly formatted and partitioned as they were when the backup was taken. I files FBH reports, but I don't know if Microsoft will even look at this problem.

Official Microsoft ISO 29683.1000 the option is not selectable. (Grayed out)
1791507011383.webp

Builds 29671.1000 and 29680.1000 The option is available on both Microsoft official ISO and uup-dump, gets error 0x80042308 when selected on either one. (Still a major problem if the disk needs to be Formatted and repartitioned)
1791507659737.webp

1791507851878.webp

Note that if I use Installation media 26300.9457 the Restore image works fine with the option to "Format and repartition disks".
The problem is only with 26340.xxxx or 296xx.1000.

Microsoft repeatedly broke its promise to Windows 11 insider users:

Windows 11 Insider Experimental (Future Platforms) Preview Build 29671.1000: No changes to Start Menu and Taskbar

.... Waiting until the latest Windows 11 Insider Experimental (Future Platforms) Preview Build 29683.1000: There are no changes to Windows Search as announced. But changing Windows Search as announced is no benefit, no effect, what a crap/meaningless change

Everyone constantly complained about web and app suggestions cluttering up Search results. So listening to the users, and removing them is a terrible idea?

I think SFC and DISM scans are two separate checks.

Usually SFC /SCANNOW also fixes the ones it finds corrupted (Like the bth.... driver files.

The important one to me is DISM /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /SCANHEALTH
If that runs clean there is no need for DISM /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RESTOREHEALTH which I only run if /SCANHEALTH finds repairable.

Also, DISM /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /CHECKHEALTH only detects errors that were previously flagged, not the current one that are found by /SCANHEALTH.
If /SCANHEALTH runs clean you can run /CHECKHEALTH again and it will be clean too. 😉

Perhaps I can reverse the order. 😂
1) DISM /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /SCANHEALTH
If # 1 finds repairable, then:
2) DISM /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RESTOREHEALTH
If #1 is clean, skip #2 and then:
3) SFC /SCANNOW

I never had any issues running SFC /SCANOW first. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks @fg2001gf11F it is something I've always wondered, the correct order and all that. I've also wondered on these Future Platform Builds whether it even matters because I'm guessing that each new build currently replaces the whole operating system anyway rather than like smaller cumulative updates that would see basic errors in the operating system carried forward.

Center is usually the default, but you can move it back to the left with the Taskbar icon alignment.
I don't like it in the center; I always set it on the left. 😉

I installed this build without any problems, but I had to go back to the previous version because War Thunder stopped working. More details at the link.
Hey! Has my problem been noticed? Maybe reinstalling the game on the latest build will solve the problem? Because because of this issue I'm stuck on the previous build. I asked Copilot, and he said the problem could be due to a major overhaul of the Windows system as well as issues with the drivers and file changes. That's true? :geek:

it would definitely make sense... its happened to me before a few years back. i think a new build fixed it though. it's really frustrating i know.

I'm going to guess Defender kicked in.
I think it is this setting that for some reason got enabled on this machine, while it is off on the other ones that don't have this issue. 😵‍💫🤷‍♂️
