Hello Windows Insiders!

Today, we are making this year’s annual feature update, Windows 11, version 26H2 (Build 26300.9278), available in the Release Preview Channel for customers to preview ahead of general availability later this calendar year.

Windows 11, version 26H2 will be delivered as an enablement package (eKB). This means that Windows 11, versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 use a shared servicing branch. It also means that they share the same new features and enhancements delivered through our continuous innovation efforts. As a result, many of the features and improvements available in Windows 11, version 26H2 might already be familiar, as they have been gradually introduced through monthly updates.

To use the correct enablement package based on your currently installed build:

KB5122776 is the enablement package for the Insider Experimental Preview Build 26340. In the installed updates list, it shows up as “Feature Enablement for Windows (Ge) 26H2 Insider Refresh - KB5122776 - 2026.08 A - BuildNumber Update.”

KB5121794 is the enablement package for the retail 26H2 release, listed as “Feature Enablement for Windows (Ge) 26H2 - KB5121794 - 2026.07 D.”

For commercial customers, Windows 11, version 26H2 enables several experiences that were introduced in earlier releases but not previously enabled by default for commercial devices. This includes Windows settings backup, app-specific actions from the taskbar, and some File Explorer enhancements. For guidance on how to prepare for Windows 11, version 26H2 in your organization, see Get ready for Windows 11, version 26H2.

Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel can install Windows 11, version 26H2 via our “seeker” experience in Windows Update. This means if you are an Insider currently in the Release Preview Channel on a PC that meets the Windows 11 hardware requirements, you can go to Settings and Windows Update and choose to download and install Windows 11, version 26H2. Once you update your PC to Windows 11, version 26H2, you will continue to automatically receive new servicing updates through Windows Update (the typical monthly update process). If you are a commercial customer enrolled in the Windows Insider Program for Business, you can deploy and begin validating Windows 11, version 26H2 on PCs in your organization using Windows Update client policies and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Azure Marketplace will be available later today. Should any issues arise, IT admins in organizations deploying Release Preview updates can request Microsoft Support.

This is weird, after the update on the R.P. machine it showed this 25H2/26H2 in Advanced options, but later the /26H2 just disappeared from Advanced options, even if it was still showing in Winver.😵‍💫🤷‍♂️
Also, the taskbar behavior went back and lost the Taskbar position options which were showing right after the update. 😵‍💫🤬🤷‍♂️

I think you all might be better off going to the later build but released earlier on Aug 17 - the 263xxxx-92xxx build. That works properly on everything I've needed including the mobile phone (link to windows) application too.

I tried KB5122776 on a Win 11 25H2 version and sure enough it switched me to 26300 (26H2). I have not tried KB5121794 but find it interesting that this is an older KB number.

EDIT: Did some more research. The correct one to use is apparently KB5122776. Word on the street is that the older will not work to actually flip you to 26H2 but I cannot confirm that. I think that the post should be updated with the correct enablement package. :-)

Great catch @hsehestedt . I used the old KB that Brink posted and everything worked. I think I remember 25H2 update or another before had the same KB as the previous. Nb ?

EDIT: just saw Brinks original post. When you just get up in the morning, don't post and then read, read and then post. :woozy:

Just for clarity, when you say that the "old" one worked, which KB was that? Because what I was trying to say was that the NEWER one (KB5122776) was the working one and KB5121794 is the "older" one that shouldn't be used.

But, I got to use my retail Vista license to get a Win7 retail license free, and then my retail Win7 license to move to Win8/.1 for $30, IIRC. Fortune favors he who acts in a timely fashion...;) Too far back to remember. Upgraded gratis on two separate machines...;) So I got money back after buying both. Of course, now I think the Insider program is the best deal going...;)

I've got a loaded Windows box with ~8TBs of programs, games, and data installed, out of 12TBs total, and I have no such problems with Windows 11. Rather, what I've seen is that people complain because they are too lazy to find out how stuff works in Windows, and rather than reading about things or looking them up with a search engine, they just give up--and complain. It's amusing to discover how much Linux users don't understand about Windows...;) But, I have no objection to what OS a person chooses. I like Windows because in terms of software and hardware compatibility, backwards and forwards, nobody competes with Windows.

Just recently on a computer-oriented website a guy wrote an "authoritative" article which flatly stated that one of the things wrong with Windows 11 is that you cannot get OS updates when you want them, but only when Microsoft decides to shunt them to you. A few people responded affirmatively to the thread, and I was happy to correct this misapprehension by pointing out that the option to receive updates only at certain times of the day had been introduced in Win11 years ago. Go figure. I see this stuff continuously, frankly. I used to help people when I could, but it's like having my finger in a dike (the dirt dam kind)...;) Settings/Windows Update/Advanced Options/Active Hours will allow them to control when they receive Windows updates. I set mine from 8:00 am to 2:00 am and as I never power down after 2:00 am, but always before, it means I only get updates when I manually check for them using "Check for Updates"...upshot is I have total control over updating my machine. This very simple fact was unknown by someone who purports to know his way around Windows. He doesn't, obviously. But he enjoys complaining. Honestly, I don't have or see any "broken parts," and If you are referring to the Insider's builds, understand that all of those are beta builds--even the RP channel. But overall, I've found RP rock stable, and I run on bare metal, only.
