Windows 11 is awful

A new laptop? If I've said it once I've said it a hundred times, "If I was given a brand new PC (laptop or desktop), the very first thing I'd do, is plug in my Flash Drive and boot up to a Clean Install of Windows 11/Pro/64, Optimum 24h2, V4.2".
I have that OS, and I absolutely LOVE it!

I'd NEVER start up a new PC with the original MS Windows 11 on it. Just too much MS BS, as I like to call it.
With the version I use, all the MS BS has been skillfully removed, by expert hands, and what remains is an OS that is FAST, much smaller than OEM, and FREE. And it runs every one of my programs, without freezes, BSOD's or any of that annoying CRAP. And NO MS Updates to screw things up.

I firmly believe, that it's all the extra CRAP that MS crams into their OS's that cause all the problems. It's like trying to haul 2 tons of rock in a 1/4 ton pickup truck. Maybe a few of you can relate to that analogy. There WILL be problems!

For those who hate Windows 11, I just wish I could install it for them, and set it up the way I set up my own. Then I think they would love it as much as I do. Happiness with any OS is all in the way that it's set up on Day One.
As a computer tech, I've worked on many PC's that were never set up properly, and they ran like crap, got loaded up with garbage, and crashed a lot. After the proper Set Up, they ran GREAT! Better than new!!!
Every NEW computer should only be installed by a professional technician, who knows how to properly configure a new system, and not by an end user.

Cheers Mates!
TM
I can relate. Many of my own customers bring their computers with a crappy installation of Windows and once I do a clean installation and then configure it to improve performance they think I overclocked it or something. It is much faster if done correctly. Those that claim Linux is faster, yes it is, because it is free of BS. Make Windows free of BS and you get a fast OS AND compatible with almost any device on the planet and billions of applications and games. Linux is no match to that. Sorry Linux fans, I just speak the truth.

Personally, I don't find too much difference between 10 or 11, maybe a shiny new coat of paint, but under the hood pretty well much the same. Yes there are things that may have been moved to another section or removed completely, but FOR ME, still same old - same old. However, I am fairly new to "modern" windows and my usage is rather "non demanding", but I am able to poke around at settings (that I probably should'nt poke at) and haven't messed up anything yet, but I am working on it.

I used to say that XP was the same as 2000 but with rounded corners, same as 10 vs 11.

Unfortunately, I did not have that option. I'm an end user and do not have the option you have access to. So I had to make do with what was preinstalled on the laptop.

I spent the first 2 weeks just getting rid of all the. ... MS put on it, then fixing its 'annoyances' and spyware before I transferred any of my own data to it. The setup even forced me into a MS account I did not want before I created a local account and got rid of the MS account.

That's why I was annoyed. Now it looks more like W10 but running faster.

I still have to look at and stop some of the services that I don't need but run automatically.

I should not have to do all this (2 weeks worth because I was unfamiliar with W11 interface)! That's why I was frustrated.

To be a critic is to judge or qualify a piece of art, science or literature. It's a shame that people seem to think that criticising has to mean denigrating or trashing something. If someone calls me critical, I don't see that as an insult.

While I somewhat agree, the movie critics suck, I have watched movies the critics rated as a 4 or 5, that were a 10 to me. So in my opinion, a critic is just voicing an opinion, so why can't we all be critics, don't we all have opinions? :-)

I agree, we can all be critics. We don't have to be grumbleweeds! If a thread annoys me I just unwatch it. I just feel a need to read opinions I disagree with because I don't want to be stuck in an information bubble.

There is an unwritten rule: When critics praise a movie too much it is going to bore you to death. When they say is crap without plot and full of effects, then it is a masterpiece. That's the whole point of watching an action or Sci Fi movie moron! For the amazing special effects, not for the plot!

Like @TraderGary, I've had few to no problems with Win 11 as well. When I was on the Beta channel, I think I had 2 BSODs forcing me to restore from my morning backup. Since being on the RP channel, I've had no issues. Would have stayed on the Beta channel, but I wanted 24H2. Win 11 runs all the programs I need and games I like to play without issues.

I'm pretty pleased with it!

When Windows 11 21H2 were out in 2021 I didn't rush to adopt it. I waited a couple of months for the first issues to be fixed (thanks Elevenforum for your help) and then upgraded. Then I got familiar with their differences from Windows 10 and then I upgraded all my computers. When a customer came with problems in Windows 10 instead of doing a clean installation of Windows 10 I installed 11 instead and made it as similar to 10 as possible (for example by using the Registry hack to always show the full context menu when you right-click). Most were amazed that their unsupported computer could run Windows 11 and thanked me. Of course I told them to never mind their system was not officially supported by Microsoft, if they had any issues they could contact me. Now of course I like Windows 11 since it is the newest (well at least until Windows 12 are out), the most compatible with new features and new games and if configured properly can be faster than Windows 10 due to better resources management. Back in they day I recommended Windows 7 instead of Vista. Now I strongly recommend Windows 11 instead of Windows 10 64-bit to be as much compatible with newest features as possible. What if one's PC is unsupported? No sweat, just bypass compatibility and install Windows 11. It will be like Windows 10 with a new skin, no difference to the average user, unless he wants to access some settings that are located in different section.

PS: I have not confirmed it myself since I don't have an AMD system, but there is a rumor that common Windows 10/11 graphics drivers for AMD are super fast in Windows 11 but make Windows 10 deliberately slower to force you upgrade to 11 since it is "faster". Yes, it has better resource management, but the difference is not huge. I believe is BS, but I cannot confirm it. Any AMD fellow?

PS: I have not confirmed it myself since I don't have an AMD system, but there is a rumor that common Windows 10/11 graphics drivers for AMD are super fast in Windows 11 but make Windows 10 deliberately slower to force you upgrade to 11 since it is "faster". Yes, it has better resource management, but the difference is not huge. I believe is BS, but I cannot confirm it. Any AMD fellow?

The difference is that Windows 11 has under the hood changes to the graphics/video subsystem inside the operating system that GPU software/driver developers like AMD and Nvidia can tap into. Also as I understand it Windows 10 will be going into EOL in October 2025.

There are more changes to display and graphics in 24H2. This includes WDDM 3.2 which has a list of changes.

So there is a hint of truth in the rumors... That said gaming PCs should always have the latest Windows version in order to support the latest graphics technologies. For the time being Windows 10 and 11 both support DirectX 12, but some time later Microsoft might release a new version of DirectX exclusively to Windows 11. Gamers cannot afford to stay in older Windows version for too long and risk losing compatibility with newer games.

PS: Linux fans, I know Steam and some other platforms are on Linux and that you can use Wine to play SOME Windows games, but let's be realists, if you are a gamer your only choice is Windows 11 or a gaming console. Anything less is a compromise. All of us buying Windows are not stupid. We get maximum compatibility with all devices, maximum compatibility with all applications and all games. It's worth the cost of the license if you want to get the most out of your PC and not use it only for office work, browsing the internet and occasional programming.

History repeats itself. When Windows 7 were new, many said they didn't like it and preferred XP. Then Windows 10 is not good, they prefer 7, Now Windows 11 is no good, they prefer 10. It is a matter of getting used to. People often doesn't like change, they prefer something they are familiar with and feel more comfortable. Here comes the various customization utilities that alter the appearance and behavior of Windows 11 to make us more "at home".

Except for Windows 8, I didn't object very much. That is, until Windows 10 and those automatic re-boots while you were in the middle of doing something back when it was first released. As well as even more & more telemetry sucking up precious bandwidth for those (like me) still stuck on DSL. Not to mention, mandatory email registration juts to use the OS. Never had to do that previously. Yeah, I know that since then, there are workarounds about that.

For me, it took almost 5 years before Windows 10 could be somewhat tamed to the point where I would use it.

Nobody forces anyone to use Windows 11 (apart from Microsoft that ends support for older Windows versions).

My work requires me to use it to access their resources, both at home and in the office.

I illustrated this point with my topic on Edge not too long ago...

Edge de-bloat

Not happy about using it but there it is.

A list of, 1x line bullet pointed "awful" points, might be more effective, in communicating your point of view, to those of contrasting opinions.

Things like that have been repeated ad nauseam throughout this website. Do a search if you're that interested.

About automatic restarts, you can set Windows Update to inform you when a restart is needed and not do it inside working hours. It is in the Advanced settings. About "mandatory" Microsoft account, there are workarounds to convince Windows you don't have an internet connection and let you create a local account without using a Microsoft account first. See relevant threads. For every other annoyance there is some workaround. Eliminating the annoyances Windows 11 is very good and I like it.

I totally disagree with the thread topic of Windows 11 being awful. It's far from it. The only version I thought was awful was Vista. I hated it so much that I did switch to Linux. I switched back to Windows when Windows 7 became available for testing. With Windows 8 I had mixed feelings. I loved it on my phone but only tolerated it on my computers. IMO, MS should have waited and released Windows 8.1 instead. The thing is as you have posted is that we need to use workarounds to get it to work and/or fresh install the way we want it. We shouldn't have to use workarounds. It should be as easy as choosing settings.

Oh yes, I know all about that, but those problem solvers have occurred since 2015 when 10 was first introduced. I didn't bother dealing with any of that. Not until support for 7 and 8.1 totally ended. Which also means I'm in no rush to deal with 24H2. I wait to the last minute and let other beta-testing people deal with that bullsh*t. That's where I come from.

Do I regret waiting 5 years before using Windows 10 at home? Not at all. Especially when we became Microsoft's beta testers and guinea pigs doing their free testing for them. Something I don't appreciate.

But it is what it is. Yeah, Win 11 is a beast. Edge is a really p*ss-poor beast. A totally POS web browser. But I have to deal with it and that's why I'm here.

Just because I use something, that doesn't mean I have to like it... I'm no fanboy, ya know. -lol
