Windows 11 preventing zip extraction and installation of QB64

I have just recently purchased a bare bones computer to use at my workbench. It came loaded with Windows 11, (I forgot to check the build), and I am having a devil of a time installing QB64. I use QB64 as a quick and dirty programming language for small projects. The package is downloaded from the QB64 web site as a compressed "7Zip" file. when I try to unpack the file package any one of three different "unzippers" seems to work, except that they all fail because they can not create directories and sub-directories during the unpacking process. After fooling around with it all day, I found that I could unpack the files to the documents directory shown in "quick access". That did not completely solve the problem, though. I moved the unpacked files and directories to the location where I wanted to install QB64. When I tried to run the self install, it ran into the same problem, as it could not create directories for the installation. I've tried turning off the virus protection and a few other things during the install to no avail. Does anybody recognize what the problem is?

Just for fun, I downloaded QB64. I used the open source 7Zip utility to extract it onto my Windows desktop.

It created a QB64 folder. Seems to be OK. No installation was required.

The window that opens for code entry is hard to read on a 4k monitor. I didn't check whether the font size can be increased.

Maybe the same approach would work for you.

Thanks for the thoughts, bobkin. I'll try that tomorrow. It is strange; the way that W11 seemed to prevent the creation of directories. It smacks of some type of anti virus / file protection, but I've never run into it before. I'm a complete rube in Windows 11, so it's still able to outsmart me. I used to wait for about two years after the release of a new Windows version before I installed it or recommended it. Heck, I'm still running 7 Ultimate with two service packs on this computer, (not the same one that I'm having problems with). I put together another one of these bare bones computers a couple of months ago. It was a temporary system for my wife and I had no problems at all, but she only does Excel and on-line banking with it, though, I did put the Arduino IDE on it. I had no problems with that, either. I suppose that I need to start getting acquainted Windows 11. I have two brand new LEGAL copies of 11 waiting for me to get around to build computers for. Well, tomorrow is another day. I'll see if I have the patients to face it again. so, thanks and good night. TechRetread

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
You could try booting into safe mode first.

I haven't had that issue.

I sometimes have had to give permission to create a files or directory on the Windows desktop, but not always. 7Zip extracted the folder tot the desktop without that.

IMHO, Windows 11 should have been called Windows 10.1. There are changes from 10, but they aren't major. Some miss the features that were "deprecated", like the ability to put the taskbar on any of the 4 edges of the screen (rather than just the bottom).

OK, guys: problem solved! It was just a case of early onset technical Alzheimer's. I forgot to check the permissions for the install directory that I had created. For those who find that their software won't unzip or won't install and see that the error(s) are coming back as "can't create directory", check the install directory's permissions. To do this, run File Explorer and navigate to the install directory or create it, if necessary. Right click on the directory. In the drop-down menu select "Properties". In the "General" tab of the properties window, first uncheck the "read only" attribute, if it is set and click "apply". After the updating process completes, click on the "Advanced" radio button; the "Advanced Attributes" window will pop up. In the window check "Folder is ready for archiving" and "Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties". Once these two boxes are checked, click "OK". Back in the "Properties" window, select the "Security" tab. In the Security window there are two smaller windows. The top window, "Group or user names", you will see a list of about seven entities. You will need to set the "permissions" for each of these. Click on the first one of these to highlight it. Next, click the "Edit" botton, located jyst below the top window. The second, (lower), window will show the currently granted permissions for the selected entity. You can scroll up and down in the second window to see the various permissions. I suggest that you simply check "Full Control". This will "allow" all of the available permissions. You will have to do this for each of the entities listed in the upper window. Once this is done click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window. At this point there should be no restrictions on your directory and the unzip / install program should run without problems.
