Times are hard, cost of living is atrocious. If you’re having budget problems, don’t pay the $10. But if you do pay, you won’t have to pay again.

I don't use it daily but the Local Group Policy Editor is very useful. And Hyper-V is good to have.

It's not just a budget thing. It's also a matter of principle. Why just give away $10 to Mr. Gates when the software hasn't fundamentally changed in 20 years? For example, I just paid him to upgrade my 2016 Office to 2024. But apart from the aesthetics, it's the same thing. I feel like we're just giving him money so we get that nice, safe feeling. It's less material than air.

It really depends on what a user needs from their PC. For general use most users would see little difference between Home and Pro.

I have no problems using Home on my System One. It's my general purpose machine, used for browsing, email, the main repository for all my documents, photos, spreadsheets, etc. There's nothing in Pro that would make it any more suitable for the uses I put it to.

I have the luxury of more than one machine though. Those have other uses, ones that require Pro.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

I'm mobile most of the time and I would not be without BitLocker and BitLocker To Go on my two 4TB Samsung T9 Portable SSD drives I use for my Macrium Reflect X full backup images.

I also like the feeling having a premium laptop and a premium OS gives me! It makes me feel that everything is faster and better! :hug:

in this house there are 6 computers
2 all in one desktops and 4 laptops. 3 laptops are for the grand children.
the 2 desktops and 3 of the laptops all run Windows Home
no one has yet found a need for Windows Pro, no one.

the last laptop is my personal laptop that i use outside the house
a refurbished 13" Dell that runs Ubuntu Linux 22.04.5 LTS
i wouldn't trust a Windows laptop outside in the wild.

its just a very simple full disk encryption, no bells or whistles, that encrypts the whole drive that is in the system.
on the wife's and my system the drive is partitioned C: (Windows) and D: (Data) and it just encrypts the whole drive
encryption password is backed up to outlook (when its working properly) and/or file.
i have both passwords saved to a USB stick so its handy if i require it.

its simple, straight forward and works without having to jump through hoops
and saves another program from being installed on to the system, works for me.

How Device Encryption Differs From Full BitLocker
  • Automatic enablement:
    • Device Encryption (Home) turns on automatically during setup if your hardware supports TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and Modern Standby.
    • BitLocker (Pro/Enterprise) lets you manually enable, disable, or configure encryption per drive.
  • Algorithm choice:
    • Device Encryption defaults to XTS‑AES 128‑bit.

This is a little misleading. BitLocker defaults to 128-bit also. The encryption technologies are the same; it’s only the management of the encryption that’s different.

And friends don’t let friends use CBC. 😜

@pseymour, it's my understanding that Windows Home only encrypts the C: partition. If the user partitions his drive into a C: Windows and D: Data drive, only the C: partition is encrypted and the D: partition is not encrypted. Is that how it works?

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

I don’t know about the drives chosen and all. I was just saying they use the same algos. I would imagine you could add or remove whatever drives you want, but I don’t use Home, so it’s a guess.
