That's weird. My last 6 Gigabyte board builds spanning from 2010 to 2025 (current build) has never caused Windows to deactivate after a BIOS update. I've seen it cause Windows Hello to act up, but never a deactivation. Weird.

Ah, I see you're running a workstation motherboard (Gigabyte MW83-RP0) so perhaps that's the reason?

The OP is just running a standard consumer Gigabyte board, so.... 🤷‍♂️

It was quite a hefty firmware update, maybe that was the cause. I've done loads of BIOS updates since & no problems! :unsure:

Are you running a digital license of Windows - a license linked to your Microsoft account?

I just swapped NVMe drives on two machines and zero activation issues. On the main system I cloned the OS drive to a new NVMe drive. No deactivations.

It's expected to be linked to my Microsoft account, because I got retail.

But, I got the dreaded "refusal to link to Microsoft account" issue.

I didn't change the motherboard, but it wasn't recognized as valid until I reentered the product key.
The reason is always that the product key wasn't found on the device.

Use it for CAD & simulation. I can connect to work & run ANSYS sims. They gave me some comedy laptop that kept crashing so I like to build my own!

I have seen it back in the Windows XP days. A major BIOS update would change many components on the motherboard so they seem to be a different device and in total a different motherboard so Windows would produce a BSOD and don't boot. Since then every time I want to clean install Windows on a computer I make sure I update the BIOS in advance and then I install Windows. This might also be the case of OP. A major BIOS update changed many hardware IDs to the point it seems a different motherboard and hence he has to activate Windows again.

As I did then, so I do today, always make sure I have the latest BIOS before each clean installation of Windows to maximize stability and compatibility and to avoid issues related to upgrading the BIOS after the installation. Also I make sure I install all the latest drivers from manufacturer (I don't rely entirely on Windows Update) before installing any apps.

In XP, there was no such thing as Windows Update installing drivers in 90 percent of cases, if there was even an implementation.
So, I never had the "Windows Update overwrites third party drivers" issue.
I actually was able to grab the drivers and not have to worry about Windows Update killing the chipset and video card drivers. Same with the sound drivers.
That issue was mostly introduced with 10, IIRC.

Thanks for the tip, biut I don't quite understand how it applies. i recently changed my router landscape, but I have an excellent (wired) network connection and the HW of my Windows box hasn't changed. Furthermore, my license is already linked to my Microsoft account. Nonetheless, I will try some of the suggested remediations.

I agree it is a somewhat off the wall suggested remedy in that MS forum thread, may be worth quickly checking it out.

I tend to think it might be when the bios was updated, some obscure setting was changed that has caused the issue you're having.

I mean I still do it now for Windows 10 and 11 installation, first upgrade the BIOS, then I install Windows 10/11 and then make sure I update the drivers from manufacturer, I don't let Windows Update create a mess. In many cases I don't connect to the internet until I have installed the official drivers (downloaded in advance), so Windows Update will find the same or newer version and won't touch them.

Even then, can't trust it. So, I set policy to block Windows Update from installing drivers.

No need to block Windows Update entirely, you can just hide (block) individual updates. I use Microsoft's Windows Update Show/Hide Tool and an alternative is Windows Automatic Update Manager (WAU Manager). Both are available in Major Geeks. Contrary to old warning from Microsoft that their Tool works only in early Windows 10 versions, it also works in latest Windows 10 and all Windows 11 versions. I have verified it myself. In the rare case you see an error and doesn't work use WAU Manager.

    Legacy MBR installation, no TPM, no Secure Boot, no WDDM 2.0 graphics drivers, no SSE4.2, cannot get more unsupported ;) This is only my test laptop. I had installed Windows 11 here before upgrading my main PC. For my main PC I use everyday see my 2nd system specs.

I tend to think it might be when the bios was updated, some obscure setting was changed that has caused the issue you're having.

TRhanks, but I haven't updated the BIOS. The only thing i haven't tried yet is the "advanced" reset of the activation. I'm a bit reluctant to try it because, if I really do have an OEM license, I have been told that it can't be used a second time. Furthermore, I have already followed the advice to link the license to my Microsoft login, but that appears not to have brought anything.
