Windows 11 Sometimes Freezes During Boot.

I have a problem for many months that has been frustrating me. Seems to remain over many windows version iterations. No BSOD. System is very stable, does not seem to crash, except for this random boot freeze.

Sometimes when I either cold start or restart Windows 11 on my desktop, it will freeze during the first spinning torrent on the initial boot phase. The torrent just stops spinning and it sits there forever. It does it about 3-4 times out of 10 I would say.

If I pull the power cord, it will cleanly boot the next time!

If I don't pull the power cord, it will usually continue to freeze at the same first spinning torrent during boot until it gives me a recovery menu or lets me boot into safe mode which it usually will. Not finding any viruses. Holding the power boot to force it to hard power off will NOT help - the power cord must be removed from the PC and then it comes back every single time.

I knew enough to disable hibernate mode, but that did not help.

I have reinstalled windows a few times, but usually not the clean install. I did do a clean install once, but it seemed to come back. Tried the usual things, like chkdsk, doing clean boot by disabling all non-MS stuff, unplugging all connected peripherals, ran SFC, etc.

I am guessing there is some hardware component that might be failing, but I have no idea which one. Is there a way to get a log file that might give me clues?

At one point I did buy a two memory modules and remove the old ones but the problem started to occur with the new ones. I have also replaced the video card as an upgrade and it continues with the new card.

If I can get some log indicating what hardware, or software, is causing it to freeze, it would be much better than just throwing parts at it!

Thanks in advance!

Hello,
Is it happening at the BIOS load time (larger spinning circle) or the Windows HAL load time (smaller spinning circle)?

Hello,
Is it happening at the BIOS load time (larger spinning circle) or the Windows HAL load time (smaller spinning circle)?

  • I get plain text messages that the Bios loads, with the bios version. date. etc - that has no spinning circle.
  • The first spinning circle I get is where it freezes.
  • The second spinning circle, if it does not freeze, says windows loading and has a blurred profile picture. It will boot normally if I get that.
So if I understand correctly, it freezes during the BIOS load time, first spinning circle.

That seems to be the case.
Any BIOS update from the manufacturer? yours is dated:

It seems you have the latest.

This is a bit beyond my knowledge as I am an OS software guy.
I suspect a hardware issue but I will leave it to someone more qualified.

One place you might look for help is under Windows Logs in Event Viewer. Look under System and you might see a hang being logged and what it might be specifically tied to. I'm unsure at that point something might be logged but you might get lucky.
My gut is suggesting this is a hardware issue. Unless you have parts to swap this becomes harder to troubleshoot.
Pull some of the ram to see if that helps. Tweak the bios. Reflash to the latest bios, although I see this is an X299 motherboard. GPU issue. Graphics driver issue.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.

I totally agree with the assumption & suggestions.
I do believe however, based on the description, that the 'freeze' happens even before HAL is implemented.
I have my doubt that the OS has even started but as stated, you might get lucky.
There are a few good diagnostics tools listed in the forum. Use them or post in a new thread as a BSOD.
That is where the experts live.

Not seeing anything much for today, when this last happened. And not really much for other past days where it did not freeze. For today, when it did occur, just a couple messages for PowerENGUAGE, Successfully application reconfiguration" - which is for a Brother printer I have connected. Seems to be the same message every day even when it does not occur.

It has:
  • Samsung 2TB M.2 EVO for Windows system
  • an 8TB hard disk for data
  • a 1TB hard disk, really just spare space.
All NTFS - all marked Healthy.

I see this message in the event log, which makes me think it knew it did not come up properly: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

In diskmanagement the OS-disk is probably listed as disk 2.
Is that a M.2 SATA disk?

Actually Disk 1 - listed as Samsung SSD 980 2TB. I updated that disk a while ago and the problem was occurring before that swap.

That command won't show firmware version, at least not for me.
1. I know that it is not the command for the firmware. It shows just the driver being loaded.
2. He doesn't have the PRO version of the 980
3. The 980 is not on the list of the supported SSDs
