Windows 11 Start Menu Sucks

Windows 10
I just installed Windows 11 (v21H2, Build 22000.194) on a local computer and looked at the new Start Menu and I cannot believe what they did. The Start Menu is totally unconfigurable.

1. It has a jumble of their apps in no particular sequence (probably the ones they want you to use first).
2. There is no way to group apps. That was the best feature of the Windows 10 Start Menu. I could set up my most used apps in a group or groups.
3. I deleted a bunch of stuff from the "Recommended" list, but then they returned. There were files that were several years old. The only way around it was to shut off "Recommended".

I suppose you could go through and rearrange everything but that is a pain. And what stops MS from setting everything back.

That is what the feedback hub is for. MS has nothing to do with this forum or any other forum unless it is thiers and even thiers, I doubt they really look at it because it is managed by mostly volunteers.

Not true. You can unpin any pinned apps you don't need, click-and-drag them to put you most used ones at the top, pin your favourite apps to it, even manually add shortcuts to the All apps list so you can then pin them to Start.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 4GB RAM, 128GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, and the Insider Canary build as a native boot .vhdx.

That will take a little work. Hopefully MS will not come in with an update and mess everything up as they have been known to do. The groups were a great idea. It is unfortunate that they got rid of them.

I just installed Windows 11 (v21H2, Build 22000.194) on a local computer and looked at the new Start Menu and I cannot believe what they did. The Start Menu is totally unconfigurable.

I configured mine, with just the "Settings"...
I just wish it wasn't so FAT, aka horizontally challenged. :D

The only thing I haven't figured out how to do in Settings or registry hack, is get it back to ONE page.
I have a 30" monitor...
"Pages! Pages! I don't need no steenking pages".

I suppose you could go through and rearrange everything but that is a pain. And what stops MS from setting everything back.
It's very configurable, and it's not such a hard task.
And I've had mine more or less this way since day 1, it's gone through two version changes, and nothing whatsoever on the 18-icon page or in the taskbar has been "set back." And the two Start Menu\Programs folders are easy to edit, with added shortcuts and folders, and even folders inside folders, as you wish, to change the All Apps list.

StartIsBack works the best, for now, for enabling all the classic features...
(I just can't get the default W11 Menu, WindowsBlinds theme overrides them all!)

How about StartAllBack? Have you tried that or considered it? I haven't seen any real-world examples of what it can do.

(I thought the naming was cute: gets that ll in there for 11.)

Some just drop down sub-folders right in the All Apps list, or show several apps shortcuts. But I understand your dissatisfaction with what can be done in there.

To each his own. I'm going to live with it until I get my TLB back. Maybe I'll try one of the blank-blank-Back programs, but not yet.

Pin what you use the most to the Taskbar, that`s what it`s there for.

Windows 11 wasn`t built in a day :)

I agree with you.
The latest version 0.90 introduced several bugs.
