If your computer is decent enough why don't you run it in a Virtual Machine - if it's only the TPM that's stopping you installing (via the "Windows 11 compatibility tool or similar) most VM systems can "Emulate" a TPM so the Virtual machine thinks its got one whether there is one in the hardware or not.

For Windows PRO you could run HYPER-V and have a W11 VM -- loads of people on these boards are doing just that or use Virtual BOX, or VMWare player -- all of these are free for non commercial use by private individuals.

Linux users can run QEMU/KVM with W11 VM too - install swtpm if you need a "virtual TPM" - it's the IBM emulator and works perfectly. Should be available in most Linux packages.

For Newbies with VM's though I'd look at VMWare player as the wizards for setting up a Virtual machine are easy, and being able to connect and disconnect external USB devices easily seems to be the easiest option.

VM's these days aren't resource hogs at all any more - and for most purposes the VM's function perfectly.

OK if a serious gamer or heavy multi-media editor (large video files etc) then that's another issue but using serious programs like Photoshop in a VM is no longer a performance issue with the right hardware.

If the CPU is a problem (not a type listed) but still a decent one with a lot of "uice" often these VM systems also allow you to "Virtualise" the actual make of the CPU as well so you can find one that works and passes the test.

No reason to "Ditch" perfectly adequate hardware just yet.

But you can, so far, continue to use workarounds to upgrade with the feature updates.

So far there have not yet been any Feature Updates for the release version 22000. But there have been many if you are running a Dev/Beta Insider build. I am on one unsupported machine, and there's a simple workaround to get a Feature Update to install through Windows Update. See my post #23 here:

I did not mean 'Deleting appraiserres.dll from C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources', I meant removing the appraiserres.dll file from the Sources Folder of the Install Media USB Stick I was pointing out that a clean install isn't the only time appraiserres.dll is used, it also plays a part in a Feature...

I've successfully done it twice now on an unsupported physical machine - not only that, but I have W11 running as a native boot .vhdx, so I was (pleasantly) surprised that the upgrade worked at all. The key is that you have to replace apraiserres.dll, not just delete it.


The two most recent feature updates were done after the install on the physical machine.

Yes I did replace it with a blank .txt file of the same name, it still didn't work. It will attempt the update, I replace the file, then it attempts again and fails with an error every time (8000402).

OK, I wiped my VM drive and re-installed Windows 10, used a Win11 ISO without the appraiserRes.dll file to upgrade to Win 11. It's now installing the latest build

From all the relevant threads I have read so far and from personal experience, Windows 11 will check for compatibility only on initial installation and when a feature update goes to a newer version (not just newer build of the same version). In both cases there are workarounds. For upgrade from Windows 10 to 11, you have to show hidden files and then delete the hidden file C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\appraiserres.dll just after the first Setup screen before proceeding. Newer Dev builds check for the file and fail if they don't find it, so the new trick is to replace it with an empty appraiserres.dll file. Just right-click on your desktop or other folder you have full access, select New text document and rename it to appraiserres.dll. Then copy it to the C:\$Windows.~BT\sources folder replacing the original file. You can then proceed with the installation of the feature update.
