Last time I called Microsoft to activate here in Greece I was connected to an automatic service. It will ask you to type the identification numbers you see on screen and then judge if your key can be activated again. If it can, it will ask you in how many computers you have used it. The ONLY correct reply is 1. If you reply anything else you might be refused activation. If you talk to a representative instead, explain that your old motherboard died and you replaced the hardware.

Welp. I did a web chat with a Microsoft Support agent and he got my license activated in about 20 minutes.

I can't quite make out how he did it though. This man remoted into my computer and was working so fast he was doing like 5 different things at once. From what I could make out he restarted some services which made the license key appear in an slmgr command that wasn't showing it before. Entered that into Windows Activation and I was up and running.

He probably called some Windows Activation script and activated Windows. So now you are OK. Please mark the thread solved so others with the same issue know there is a solution.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

Phone activation was shut down in 2025.
Calling the number will tell you to go to:

Good thing I didn't need it since then. Previously when Windows 10/11 would not activate, we could use a Windows 7 or 8 or 8.1 key. But a couple of years ago Microsoft disabled this option. The only legal choice, apart from buying a new key, is to call Microsoft and hope your current key has not reached the maximum times of activations.

I had a related issue a while ago. I had been moving an ssd with an os between two machines without any problem for many months. They both had the win7 free upgrade license.

Then suddenly they both declared "hardware change"

Managed to get one machine reactivated via MS account.

The other machine never reactivated.

Just another Microsoft trick to force everyone use a Microsoft account to login. The key is registered to your account and you can transfer the activation in case of upgrading the hardware. With a local account your only legal choice is contact Microsoft or buy a new key. Another reason for me to keep using my current computer (2nd system specs) as long as possible. I don't care it is unsupported. I am my own support and when I need more help I consult this forum. As long as it suits my needs and is working perfectly I won't replace it. Besides it is faster than I need considering its age.

As others have suggested, for $10 for a new key from Stack Social, it's hard for me to justify spending much money on trying to get an old key working. Pro or Home are the same price, but I can't think of many reasons that you wouldn't just go for Pro.

I've bought a couple keys from them, never had any issues.

Those keys are too cheap. Probably unused volume activation keys. While not illegal, still genuine, the EULA says they should be used by computers belonging to the company that bought them. Not sold outside the company. Much preferable though than illegally activating Windows. Also OEM keys are supposed to be sold with an OEM computer. Some shops will tell you to buy some cheap hardware, such as a mouse or USB flash drive to justify selling them. Others might even sell them separately without buying any hardware which again is violating the EULA. Of course again is better to have a genuine key than illegally activating Windows.
