Windows 11 Update Process Locked

I would like to go straight to W11 but I would need fix the TPM etc. on my ASUS motherboard
Your system information doesn’t list your motherboard model, but since you’re using an Intel Core i7-9700 processor, your ASUS motherboard is most likely from around 2019.

On older ASUS motherboards, TPM 2.0 is usually not enabled by default. You can enable it using one of the methods below:

Method 1
Update to the latest BIOS to get Windows 11 support
Click on the below support list to download the latest BIOS, which supports Windows 11 by default and doesn’t require manual changes in the UEFI BIOS.

Method 2
Manually activate support in UEFI BIOS
Follow the below instructions to manually enable Windows 11 support in the UEFI BIOS on your Intel® or AMD motherboard.

Once this is done, your PC will meet the requirements for installing Windows 11. You don’t need to change any other BIOS settings, so disabling CSM (Compatibility Support Module) is not required.

The screenshot below shows the one-time boot menu on an ASUS motherboard (opened by pressing F8).

If CSM is enabled in the BIOS, the Windows 11 USB flash drive will appear twice: once with the UEFI prefix and once without it. Select the USB device with the UEFI prefix, and Windows Setup will automatically install the operating system on a GPT disk.

Which BIOS upgrade do I need?
I’m not sure which of the following applies to your motherboard. Both models list a BIOS version with the note: "Support Windows 11 by default, no settings changes required in the UEFI BIOS." In either case, please make sure you install the latest BIOS version.

PRIME H310M-E R2.0

PRIME H310M-E R2.0/BR

Alternatively, you can manually change the BIOS settings:

Manual Activation Instructions:

  1. Press "Del" when the ASUS or ROG logo appears to enter the BIOS.
  2. Go to the Advanced\PCH-FW Configuration page and click “Enable” on the "PTT” drop-down menu.

screenshot of the Advanced\PCH-FW Configuration page
  3. Once you attempt to make the change in the BIOS, a notification box will appear (see below). First click the OK button, then press F10 to save your changes and reboot your PC.

Before you begin to install Win 11 you need to transfer your data (if any) from the M.2 NVMe drive to another drive.
Boot from same windows you used on post #14 and with Explorer select M: (the M.2 NVMe drive)
Go to M:\users\"Name" and copy "My Documents", Music, videos etc to another drive.

- Rebuild your Win 11 USB installation drive Using Rufus so it can boot as UEFI. See post #23
- Manually enable TPM on your BIOS. See post #24
- Detach any other drives (remove the power connector). This is very important as you have other drives with Windows on them. If you don't disconnect, it will install Windows on the M.2 NVMe drive but the boot manager will be on another drive.

You're should be ready to install Win 11 on the M.2 NVMe drive

On BIOS
Reset BIOS or load defaults.
Set Disk mode to AHCI, not RAID
Select OS mode = UEFI
Disable fast boot and secure boot (you can turn it on after installation)

Windows can be installed in two ways: Legacy-MBR or UEFI-GPT
To install as Legacy-MBR you must boot the installation drive as Legacy
To install as UEFI-GPT you must boot the installation drive as UEFI.

As you have a UEFI BIOS, you should install as UEFI-GPT

During POST, press F8 to launch the boot menu. You will see two options for the USB drive. USB UEFI (Name) and USB (Name). Select USB UEFI (Name) to install as UEFI-GPT. See post #21
The Rufus Installation drive allow you to select local account and other good options. Select them as you wish.
Go to install and delete ALL partitions on the main drive till you have one and only one unallocated space and then proceed.

I have spent some time trhying to get everything ready and I made a fatal error when playing around with the drive by deleting the drve that had Windows installed. I tried an UNDO but that doesn't seem to have worked.
The M2 drive now completely unallocated and I have just tried to install W11 but you will see the error I am getting.

The M2 drive now completely unallocated and I have just tried to install W11 but you will see the error I am getting.

I explained how to fix the problem in post #10, but here it is again.

The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, the operating system can only b...webp

"The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, the operating system can only be installed to GPT disks."

This error message means that you have booted the Windows 11 USB flash drive in UEFI mode, but the disk is using the MBR partition style. Windows cannot be installed because the boot mode does not match the partition style.

How to fix it:

Delete all partitions (select the "Delete Partition" option) until there is only one "Unallocated Space" remaining on the disk.

When all partitions are deleted and only a single unallocated space remains, the error message will no longer appear.

Select Next. Setup detects that the system was booted in UEFI mode and installs Windows on a GPT disk.

edit:

There is no need to run the clean and convert gpt commands in DiskPart. Windows Setup automatically determines the correct partition style (GPT or MBR) based on the boot mode of the USB flash drive (UEFI or BIOS).

The convert gpt command is needed after the clean command when creating partitions manually; otherwise, the create partition efi size=200 command will return the error message: "MSR and EFI partitions are only supported on GPT disks. Convert the selected disk to GPT and try again."

Windows applications numerates the drives starting from 0 and Macrium or Minitool Partition numerates the drives starting from 1

The installation wizard also numerates the drives starting from 0
You're trying to install Windows on drive 0 that is a WD HDD (disk1 on Macrium).
The M.2 NVMe drive is drive 3 (disk 4 on Macrium)

Please make an effort and disconnect all SATA drives (remove the power cable from the drive) or you may end cleaning a data drive.
Leave on only the M.2 drive and follow the instructions I gave you on post #25

Sorry to be a pain but II have just tried a W11 install following the info on here but I am still getting the MBR error.

I am 100% certain that I made the SSD just one unallocated partition.

I am wondering how I can check the drives so make sure as the W11 install doesn't give that. I have downloaded the Hiren's diasc but RUFUS gives a security warning and when I tried to use it there was no OS to load, is there anything else I can use took at the drives and what do I need to check?

I suspect the system is still encountering an MBR vs GPT mismatch.

Try the following steps (I’ve personally never needed to do this, despite installing Windows many times, but it can help in stubborn cases):

On the "Select location to install Windows 11" screen in Windows Setup:

1. Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Prompt.
2. Run the following commands:

diskpart
list disk
select disk <disk number>
clean
convert gpt
exit

3. Close the Command Prompt.
4. Click Refresh so the changes take effect.

Good morning

Ran Diskpart and it shows

Disk 0 Online 931GB Free 0B
Disk 1 Online 114GB Free 0B with a mark beneath GPT

I selected 1 but when I try Clean it says There is No Disk Selected

I am assuming Disk 0 is the W11 Install USB drive

I must apologise for the time I am taking up and my confusion.

I am trying to reinstall W11 on the SSD M2 drive not on a USB drive. The SSD is a WD Blue SN550 NVMe SSD 1TB

It's doing my head in!!

I have been looking at the BIPS and also the drive location screen for W11 to see if I can make any sense of what I am seeing.

I am sure I deleted all the SSD partitions before I started but see that I can delete partitions from the W11 location screen would it change things if I deleted all the drive 0 partitions???

If Disk 0 is the SSD you want to clean, run the following command:

select disk 0

You should see the message shown in the image below:

"Disk 0 is now the selected disk."

After that, the clean command should work.

edit: Finally, remember to click Refresh so the changes take effect in Windows Setup.

I’ve never had to use the clean command, even though I’ve installed Windows many times in UEFI/GPT mode on disks that previously used BIOS/MBR.
