Windows 11 update repeatedly fails

System / Recovery, Reinstall now. This leaves your settings and file intact but will reinstall Windows. Be sure to pick the right option in the process, it can also do a clean install, you probably don't want to do that!

I'm not so worried about personal files as I don't tend to store these on my C drive. Settings I'm not so sure about as I've spent a lot of time trying to restore network share functionality that recent windows updates apparently intentionally breaks due to enforced SMB security changes. I'm not sure these would be considered "settings". My main problem is losing my apps, a few of which are essential for my work and have been difficult to get set up as a new installation on Windows 11. The time I have had to dedicate to that has been phenomenal. My understanding is that I would lose these using recovery.

If that's the case then I might as well just do a clean install.

As present, my computer seems to be working perfectly normally (and is reporting no system errors or corruptions) apart from the inability to install the latest update, so I'm thinking I should wait for a Microsoft fix. There does seem to be a lot of people having similar problems. I seem to have exhausted every avenue beyond the recovery or clean install route and I now don't have any confidence that even that will fix it!

You do NOT lose your installed applications with a repair install! I've done one three or four times over the years, and I've kept all the applications, etc intact. To get my system configured the way I like it and to install all the applications, utilities, etc. I use takes quite a few hours, so I'm not all that keen on a clean install unless I have to do one. The Repair Install just replaces the actual Windows system. You may lose a few O/S settings, etc. but nothing major.

I suggested this at the very beginning of the thread. I'll point out again all your "apps", settings, and configurations should be maintained. However you told me when you tried the repair install you received "Repair version of Windows not found, please try again later" so that didn't seem to be a usable option for you.

Restore Health Operation finished successfully. Sfc found corruption and fixed.

Trying to download, over an hour and still at 5%.

Should MS be advising about a work around.

System / Recovery / reinstall now does not exist, at least on the device I'm working on.

There is System / Recovery / fix problems using windows update

and

System / Recovery / Reset this PC

I think the one being suggested is the System / Recovery / fix problems using windows update.

The machine I'm working on is a Dell i5 10th gen with 8GB with HDD. It runs like a duo core with 2GB and a floppy.

So is fix with update or reset being suggested.

Yup, I saw that but your an exception not the rule. For most people that repair install option works well and solves the Windows Update errors while taking them to the latest build keeping all their settings, apps, etc. How you got so unlucky I have no idea but hopefully a future Windows Update will succeed for your issue.

Kind of sounds like the needed component store files needed for your repair are missing. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Kind of sounds like the needed component store files needed for your repair are missing. 🤷🏽‍♂️
...Except that on the SFC and DISM scans I'm getting "No component store corruption detected"...

Takes so little time to clone 100 GB. Twenty bucks will get you a Windows 11 Pro key. Belarc advisor will get you your license/activation keys. A fresh install could save you precious hours of work and get you up and running on a drive of respectable capacity. Sometimes the fight just isn't worth the hassle. Sometimes having access to more than one OS is more rewarding. User preference prevails.

Yep... hindsight and all that... This seemed like a small hiccup when I first saw it. I had no other issues with my computer, and how it has been working for the 8 months I have owned it. I stupidly thought this would be pretty simple and quick to fix!

I use the computer for mostly scientific work tasks and the usual communication tool, but rarely have time to get into the more technical hardware or software side. I get what you are saying, but I have never installed and cloned a fresh hard drive, so I suspect would be starting from a steep learning curve. Having said that, I do have a back-up laptop that I have just upgraded to Windows 11, which would benefit from replacing the HDD with a SSD:unsure:

On the capacity side; after my unsuccessful UUP update attempt, I can see that my C drive use has mysteriously dropped to just over 42% free space, so swings and roundabouts...

I hear you loud and clear. I've been there done that more times than I care to recall and when you already have that much time invested into your effort quitting hardly seems a viable option. (Especially if you're a problem solver at heart.) I recommend following Zbook's instructions to the letter if you want to satisfy your scientific curiosity. The man has never let me down and I daresay he's light years ahead of most of us here when it comes to solving this sort of thing.

As for cloning there's all sorts of software out there for this and personally, I believe it to be a worthwhile investment if your data is priceless. I nowise do I suggest abandoning backups but it always helps to have a clone of your OS on hand when you don't have time to fool around. Just keep it tucked away in a nice dry, cool, corner. More often than not if you can't boot to your OS you can access the defective drive with a clone and extract all your current data back to the clone via Disk Management or Disk Manager.. or whatever they're calling it these days.

I hope this helps. :-)

So I started over.

Ran dism /restorehealth - success - restarted (not shutdown)

Ran sfc - nothing found - restarted

Ran Windows Update reset - success - restarted.

Ran update - failed.

I haven't run repair yet. The owner does not know their MS password and everything lives in One drive. So that has to be resolved.

Thanks, zbook - This is a lot! I need to re-claim some work time right now so I'll be initiating your steps over the coming days. Fortunately, whatever is causing this issue is not impacting on any other part of the functioning of my computer as far as I am aware. Also, it seems that after the cleaning up processes from my various restore efforts had completed I was back with 45GB+ of C drive space, so the >30GB requirement is not and issue...

Some findings:

a) Possible drive / drive connection problems
b) BSODs
c) Windows Upgrade failure error code 0x800F081F for KB5065426 (26100.6584)

Please perform the following steps:

1) Free up space so that there is > 30 GB free space

2) Make sure that no additional cleaning is performed during the troubleshooting

3) Reattach all drives including flash drives for testing

4) Search for > post share links
C:\windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log
C:\windows\logs\CBS\CbsPersist

5) Run Sea Tools Long generic test (all drives) > post images or share links

6) Run HD Tune (all drives) (old version) > post images or share links

a) Health

b) Full error scan

7) Open administrative command prompt and copy and paste:

chkdsk /b /v

Run these chkdsk switches on all drives using the syntax: chkdsk /b /v C: or chkdsk /b /v D: or chkdsk /b /v E: etc.

Make sure that the windows drive runs overnight while sleeping.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>chkdsk /b /v
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Type: Y

Reboot as needed.

8) After completing all chkdsk /b /v run:

https://www.tenforums.com/attachmen...-files-use-bsod-debugging-chkdskfromevent.bat

Batch files for use in BSOD debugging - Windows 10 Help Forums

Batch files for use in BSOD debugging - Windows 10 Help Forums

Make sure that this runs only after the prior three steps for each drive.

9) Run HD Sentinel (all drives) > post images or share links (do not run until posting results for each steps 5, 6, 7 and 8)

Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring
a) Overview
b) Temperature
c) SMART

10) Please make sure that all of the above steps are performed in sequence

These steps / tests can be performed overnight while sleeping:

a) Sea Tools Long generic test
b) HD Tune Full error scan
c) Chkdsk /b /v

11) Open event viewer
a) system > post a share link
b) application > post a share link

12) Read this link on Windows Driver Verifier (WDV):

Enable and Disable Driver Verifier in Windows 10

13) Create a new restore point:

14) Learn the methods to recover from BSOD caused by WDV by booting into safe mode and running one or more of these commands:

verifier /reset

verifier /bootmode resetonbootfail

(option nine and seven)

14) Do not run WDV until it is communicated in this thread

15) Do not attempt any upgrades until it is communicated in this thread

Hi zbook,

I have gone through and run the various recommended apps and routines outlined by you up until and including stage 8 - the results of each are here:

From what I have seen there seems to be no issues with either of the drives installed in my laptop, but you will be able to interprete the results better than me.

I have again tried to download and install the update in the hope that some of the repair routines had fixed it, but I'm still exactly where I started! As before it goes through the update and installation progress up to 100% and then just says Update Failure!

Is the next stage (9) to begin to investigate whether there are any driver issues?

To again reiterate, I am seeing no other issues at all in my day-to-day use of the computer, other than the Windows update failure
